Khaku2,

From my personal experience, net & brushes are the best algae filter. However, algae will remain trapped and require regular cleaning. Algae is very massive and is not as degradable as the fish waste. Usually the algae are the curlpit when your filter is clogged up.

I suggest you flush your filter more often than normal during the hot season. Even the Answer clogged up by algae during the hot season. Sand or Gravel does not make any difference.

There is no easy solution, unless the algae is eliminated from the pond. i.e. algae free pond.

I hope this helps

i just got some barley pads, are they good for your pond????

the gravel is catching alot of debris including dead algae caused by the barley pads.
my water has no debris in it. but a faint green look in it, the barley is really working.

Hi khaku2,

You are right, barley straws are commonly used in places where barley straws are available. Usually barley straws not only trap the dead algae, they also retard algae growth too. If BS is available in your area then it is best to use them instead of using gravel or sand.
In my country BS is not available and the only defense system against algae growth is by using a good TT or wet/dry filter system. This filter system removes Nitrate and Nitrate is one of the element that promote algae growth.

If you are interested, you can find heaps of info about DIY TT system in this forum. Start from the Hot Topic section first, they are very interesting.

Rgds
