need help with filter Can't Post

Hi, I would like to build big filter. Question is how big? My pond is about 130 square meters (no fishes yet). Does anyone know how big filter should I build, and what materials for filter should I use (foam, stones, ceramic bioballs etc.) . I've hear that half of water from the pond should be pumped through the filter per hour (65 square meters), is that true ?

hi matchek..

ur filter shud be 1/3 of ur pond surface area.. need not to be deep, but must have bottom drain for easy flushing of waste at the bottom. ur pond turn over rate shud be btw 1 or 1 1/2 time in an hour..

japanese matting, brush, ceramic rings shud be good for mechanical / biological purposes.. do consider building a trickle tower with bio balls or lave rock as those can reduce ur water's nitrate level..

cheers

Hi, thx for advice. It has 1.8 m in the middle shores are about 1m and swamp area is 0.5 m. About the filter I heard that I can use some kind of coal. i've seen pond about 50 square meters and only one filter 1000L filled with coal, it works for 3 years and water is very clear.
That's my pond:

Coal ???? you mean activated charcole i think...

Is that a pic of your pond ??? Nice size dude (musta got planning permission from your missus right ?)

Any way it depends on how many fish you wanna keep ... if your going to have max dencity for fish your gonna need a big filter...

If your just going to have a few you might not need one. But best to plan for alot coz they do grow on you.

If you wanna have a large filter it's best to make it yourself. Some of the ones you can buy just don't do enough..

If you have room i would go for a vegy filter also...

Do you have bottom drains ??? Or is the waterfall pump fed from inside the pond ???

It's some kind of coal and it's not "activated charcole".
Yes it's my pond, yes permission was needed.
How many fishes, hmm about 10-15 Koi I think.
Yep i've got a lot o free space.
That thing at the middle that is a fountain, there is a waterfall of course.

I hope my english is ok :)

Ok, please tell me what you think about my blueprints:

Dear Matchek

Your english is fine.better than mine and i live in the country Blush

Your filter blue print looks good..

I would only change it a little for better particle removal. Like if the first tank was fed with the pond water from the bottom with a bend so you got a vortex working it would make the solid bits sink like a wirlpool. then have the water go from the top of that to the bottom of the next tank so water gose up through the sponges to the bottom of the next tank and up throught something like agrogog and sponges at the top.

It's a shame you didn't do it with bottom drains as pumps inside the pond kinda mince up the solids making them harder to get out becouse they get so small..

But good look with it, it looks good your way as well ..

A very impressive pond indeedCool. With one so large it is difficult to use traditional filtration methods because the filter area needs to be so large. Normally for Koi you want to turn your entire pond volume over through the filter once every hour or two. Estimating your pond volume to be approximately 150,000 litres that makes for a very large filter area and pump. I assume you must be somewhere in Southeast Asia, as your filter design is typical for the region.
You may want to consider a Bakki Shower type of filter as it eliminates the need for large chambers for solids removal. The main drawback then would be the need to pump more water as they work best if the water is turned over 1 1/2 - 2 times per hour.
You may want to PM Mohan Ghandi to ask him to take a look at this thread as he is the only person on this forum I know of with such a large pond as this. His Koi are excellent so his water has to be as well.
P.S. I would be cautious about using Coal. Most Coal has Sulphur in it which could leach into your water and be very unhealthy for Koi.
