pond and filter lay out. will it work? Can't Post

hi to all "sifu" in this forum. first of all, very interesting forum. I have learned a lot here regarding pond and filter construction. I am planning to build one in my yard. but due to the space concern, i can only have a small one. some thing like a W6' X L10' X D3 1/2' inclusive of filter. it will be 1 1/2' below ground and 2' raise. don't think i can go any deeper due to the sewage pipe running through near by. will be attaching the basic layout, can you good people advice my if it will work? thank you in advance ya.Smile

And oh!! for those of you who believe in "feng sui" is it ok to have the pond at the side of house, or better in front.

Hi,
looking at your design, the pipe from the pond to the filter will become the "settlement chamber", I have experienced this with the situation of the filter is the same depth with the pond, I will recommend the first settlement chamber of the filter is the same or even deeper than the pond, but if you still want to work it that way, let us know, I'll tell you what I did as a workaround...

One more question. what kind of wood is the best for filter decking? I am living in Malaysia.

This is what I did to my pond, I let the pipe to remain as "settlement chamber", but make an easy way to clean it. The basic principle is how the create a high water flow to clean the pipe and drain it. What I did:
- Create a pipe to stop the water to flow from pond to the filter chamber
- Drain the 1st filter chamber.

Whenever I want to clean the pipe, I will (pls refer to the picture attached)
- set-up the green pipe in the filter chamber that is higher than the water level and drain the filter chamber, by doing this, we've created a difference of water level between filter and pond (D).
- Once the filter chamber is almost empty, pull out the green pipe and the high water pressure from the pond will clean-up the pipe, special care as there is a possibility that your koi will get sucked into it.
- set-up the green pipe again and drain all the debris from your filter chamber.
- When it is ready, take out the green pipe again and let the system operate as usual again

I did this every week and it only take me less than 5 minutes to execute the whole process . Btw, I don't have bottom drain in my filter, I use submersible pump to drain it.

Hope this help.

Edo

After looking at the dttk design from Jon, as part of your pond is above the ground, with this idea, you don't need even need a pump to drain the filter chamber or the pipe,....Pls refer to the new picture. You need 3 "pullpipe" ?. (A, B & C, the red color in the picture).
- during normal operation, let the pipe B & C in place. Pipe C will prevent the water to flow out, and if you arrange at the correct height, it will be used for overflow during heavy rain.
- When you want to clean the low drain pipe, put in pipe A and pullout pipe C
- To clean the filter chamber, put in pipe A and pullout pipe B

Hope this one works better...

thanks edo, let me see if i get you right..... so, pipe C should be just a little... bit higher then the water level to function as an overflow. pipe A & B can be much higher then the water lever to preven water overflow and pipe B conection shall be same level as the bottom of filter chamber. with your disign, i save $$ on pump and i don't even need stopper for the outlet pipe. Sly save a few hundred ringgit again. HAHAHAHA!!!! so....Smile

you must have did a lot of study on pond and filter my friend. BTY where are you from?

regards,

yiaw

You are right about the pipe my friend, I am happy if it help. I am no expert in pond or filter design, just a person who want to enjoy the fun of koi keeping, but does not want to spend much $$ on it, then I have to squeeze my small brain for a cheaper solution. I myself have a wrong pond design. Btw, i am from Jakarta....

Jakarta, Indonesia. so we should be enjoying the same kind of weather and same kind of jungle as well. can you tell me what kind of wood is the best for filter cover. I heard some one in this forum said that chengal is no good because it drips chemical. is it true?

Hi neutokoi,

I use chengal and it is one of the best wood around. If it is untreated, it might leach some tannins into the pond. Otherwise, make sure it is sufficiently season in the outdoor and use a good pond safe paint.

Cheers..

Hi newkoinut,

Do be careful of the chengal as it does leach but it will clear after a while. I am sure others can recommend other paint brands but I chose to use Ronseal (a water base paint which forms an elastic seal from USA). Extremely easy to work with. There would be many other choices, I am sure. I use that for my entire decking needs.

cheers..
