problem with DIY filter for waterfall Can't Post

Previously, I placed my pump in the pond and connect it directly to the waterfall. This was a major mistake since all the dirt from the pond clogged up the pipes after a while and the pump became clogged up too.

So, I decided to create a separate filter for the water that goes into the waterfall. I drilled a hole at the level of the water in the pond so that it acts as a surface skimmer as well. The water from this hole is directed to a filter in a fibreglass tank. Water from this fibreglass tank is then pumped back into the waterfall that flows into the pond. The water will then overflow into the filter again.

My problem is that after a short period of time, around 2 hours, the water level in the fibreglass tank goes down to the extend my pump stops(my pump has a water level detector). The water level in the pond also stops overflowing into the fibreglass tank.

My only thought is that somewhere something is leaking. Could it be something else? Can someone advice. Thanks.

Hi Freer,

My immediate thoughts would be that, either the outflow rate from the pond to the filter-tank does not quite match the flow-rate of the pump, i.e. the inflow pipe is undersized, or that the outflow pipe is set too high in the pond, thus affecting the gravity-flow of water to the filter tank.

However, when you stated that "The water level in the pond also stops overflowing into the fibreglass tank", my "uneducated" guess would be that the filter has clogged-up, real good.

Good luck!

Sorry, this sounds like a definite leak somewhere. It is possible depending on your location that your filter does not hold enough water to compensate for your evaporation rate, however, in 2 hours you would need to loose about the volume of your filter divided by your pond surface area. Do the calculation and you should be able to see if this is the case.

Essentially once you start this type of system the water should go round and round, regardless of anything until either the power stops or you run out of water. Your likely causes of water loss are evaporation or a leak.
