settlement chamber Can't Post

Would it be possible to make a good settlement chamber by making a separate small pond with rubber liner, cone shaped bottom, and bottom drain?

Would it need to have a cover?

I was going to use a plastic 45 gal. drum but I have a larger pond and I don't think the water will have time to settle in a container this small. I can't find anything else affordable.

What you propose will work if large enough, but have you looked at Koi38's "Simple Drum Filter" in this forum. Very effective, simple to make from a drum (or two) and easy to maintain.

Hello,
I have just realized that if I do a settlement chamber using rubber liner, I'll need to cement in the bottom drain for this the same as my pond Tongue. Too much work, too much time. I am hoping to have the fish in the pond by mid April Unsure.
On to the barrels !!! I did look at the plan for the barrel filter. I also looked at the pond they were used on and the water looks great. But my pond is so very overstocked, I think it would be better for me to arrange it a little different.
I was thinking of a barrel (or two) for each stage of filtration instead of combining all into one. Apparently I'll need to get a degree in plumbing so I can figure out how to join them all together Tongue. But first of all, biology 101.
How about a 45 gal. plastic drum with a cone bottom and brushes for the settlement chamber? What would be the best way to position the brushes?

Brushes or mats either one would work great. Just rig a way to fasten the tops of them together and suspend them from the top of the drum. That way they are easy to clean with an occasional "shake up" and the rest of the time you can just ignore them and let'em do all the work for you.

Hello,

Right now my main pump is a 3500 gph submersible. It is fairly new so I will continue to use it for now. When it needs to be replaced I would like to get an external pump. To accommodate the bottom drains, I will need to move the pump out of the pond. Would it work best to put it before the settlement chamber or after?

Hi Jaylene,

Normally they install the pump (submersible or external pump) after the filtration in a gravity feed system. I'm using a submersible pump myself and its in my last chamber pushing the water back to pondSmile

If each BD has settlement chamber, do I make a row of filters for each settlement chamber?

Hi Jaylene,

If you're having more than one BD I suggest to have a settlement for each BD. No you don't need separate filters for each BD unless you have a space issueSmile

Jon

Hello Jon,

Do I take all (2-3) settlement chambers and join them to a single mechanical filter?

Hi Jaylene,

If you want to you can, but if you can afford to separate them its even better. So when you do your maintenace you don't have to shut the entire filter.Smile

Hi Jaylene,

If you are building/making 2 sets or more filters the answer is yes. But if you are building/making 2 or more settlements and one set of filter then the answer is noSmile

Jon

Hi Jon,

I don't want to buy more pumps right now so I'll be using one set of filters. I will need minimum two or three bottom drains. If I had all (2-3) settlement chambers going into a single 45 gal drum for mechanical filtration , what kind of pipes would I need coming out of the drum? Unimpressed

Jaylene,

Use 4" pipe for connecting each drums to maximise water flow. Smaller pipes will give you troubleShockedWink

Hello Jon,

If three 4" pipes are entering one drum, will just one 4" pipe leaving the drum be enough?

Hi Jaylene,

IMHO, it should be fine. It will give you much better flow than small pipesSmile

Hello Jon,

If I position the pipes exiting each drum facing upwards, will I still be able to use floating plants or will they be sucked up?

Hi Jaylene,

Eventually they will get sucked in not unless you place a stainless steel mesh over the transfer pipeSmileSmileSmile
