simple question Can't Post

Hi all 1st post here, hate to join and just jump in and ask something but I am sure I will get into the swing of things here soon.

Anyway here's goes, my pond at the moment is a rather boring rectangular affair and have re-homed the fish for the time being and dug out to make the pond more round plus larger and deeper and intend on building a waterfall at one end I was thinking of using a cement mix to bed in some of the rocks but I am worried about the water washing past the cement and killing the fish. Is this a likely thing or am I considering something thats not an issue? also if it is a problem what can i do to work round it

Anyway asked plenty for now going to go read through the forum and see what else I can pick up

all answers appreciated

John

Re: [papa_lazerous] simple question [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello, I have a company that builds koi ponds, and I only use cement! There is always a cheaper way to build a koi pond, but that is generaly not the best way. I use cement because it LASTS, it costs more, it takes more time to build the pond, but in the long run it is the best. Cement ( if mixed and used) correctly will last for many years! Now as far as a waterfall, there are no problems, One must remember that cementing bricks and rocks are two different things. Bricks will absorb water out of the cement when laying the bricks, therefore the mixture of the cement must be aliitle wetter than when laying rocks. Rocks are generaly very solid, and as such they do not absorb water out of the cement, so when laying rocks the cement has to be mixed very dry. So if this is new to you, I would hire a good mason to do the work. And with using cement, there are issues of the PH in the water. I can help more, let me know.

Thanks for your advice Cool

I have no worries mixing the cement I had figured that it would need to be a dryish mix, its not going to be structural either its just to hold rocks in place to bed them in, (well maybe thats a little structural) but its not holding the pond together or anything and will have no pressure from water exerted on it.

If the lime is my only consideration what I shall do is let it cure and thoroughly rinse everything over a few days at regular intervals, fill the pond and see where I am at as far as water quality is concerned. I just wanted to double check before I went upsetting my fish

Yes, lime will leach out! In general cement takes about 28 days to cure, once cement has hardend you can keep it wet or underwater. Fill the pond and drain the pond, this is the way. check the ph. but after 28 days there should not be anymore leaching!Let the pond sit with water for a week or so, drain it and fill it again!
