Hi there. I think I would be pretty worried if I was a fish in one of those. They look like a very large deep fat frying basket! Crazy Only kidding.
Since looking into koi properly, and coming to this site, I am amazed at how proffessional everything is. It is nice to learn new things everyday and see what products are available. (They certainly look the buisness)

tempura koi!

seriously though, the kois wont come anywhere near this ...
i will put some plastic bio media here (ultra bio media in this case) and put in lots of airstones to make a "moving bed"
which they say performs better than static media like our jap mats.

for more info, check out "kaldnes moving bed" at evolutionaqua.com

this is my DIY version of it.

Mike, do we really need to have the basket? Can't we simply let the media loose in a concrete chamber and let the airstones move them around? I believe we need the basket only if we are taking out the media on a frequent basis.

you dont need the basket if you can just make sure the input, output, and the drain of this chamber will NOT let the media back out.

i also chose to put it in the basket to avoid having koi poop or other bigger stuff mixing with the media. the stainless screen holes are 1000 microns in size.

Hi Mike,

The basket does look impressive and the fabrication looks really good. I am only concerned regarding the 1000microns that you chose. Has the basket been put into operation. I would think that the holes will clog up in no time, if not by the debris, then the microfilm will get it in time. Anything to share on this?

Cheers..

it does get lots of crud ... i have put it in for a week or two (without airstone yet)
and it already needed cleaning, but maybe its because i put it too close to the vortex settlement. i have another 1000 micron screen before this and i cant believe that a lot of crap still get through.

anyway, i plan on using another pump to spray the crud of from the inside of the container. i couldnt find a screen that had bigger holes than a 1000 micron, maybe next time. this will have to do ... its a good thing i have now wised up and started to use laborers to have these stuff cleaned. i used to do all the pond work, but not anymore!

Hi Mike,

I believe some of the hobbyist who were using the 250micron answer complained of it clogging due to the biofilm. If you search around, I am sure you can find those bigger than 1000micron. I have alot of those screens of various sizes in my house, bought to diy but aborted due to change of plans! Sly

Cheers..

I have seen one that is very nice, but it is quite expensive to buy a new one. It is actually the stainless tub of "electrolux" washing machine Wink, I have one machine that is not functioning and too expensive to repair, thinking of using it for tickle tower. :-)

Hi Jon

AFAIK the only metal safe for pond or tank use is marine grade stainless steel (some low grade stainless will rust if the surface finish is scratched "test with a magnet if it sticks it will probably rust"
Remember all fish are sensitive to most metal salts! And all metals will eventually produce salts when in water except SS,

Hi Graham,

What is "AFAIK"??? Not really familiar with metals. Except SS, and yes I use magnet to test the quality. If it sticks it will rust eventuallySmile

Thank's Mike

A good response, I apologise for the wording of my query, I appreciate that a site run by a vet (implied in name) should give excellent advice on Koi health problems, and had intended to query whether other topics were covered rather than implying that it was not useful as my post is phrased!

Have now visited as I should have done before posting!

no biggie, i was merely pointing out that they dont strike up a conversation that much. but their archives of fish health problems are plentiful.

most of the people deserted the forum because of some spat/ban/fighting of some posters.
