Hi Jaylene,

You forgot slide valvesShockedTongue

Here goes..........Gate valves and ball valves are normally use for controling the water flowSmile Slide valves is widely use for drains like in drums. They can quickly open and closeWink Check valves if I'm not mistaken is for preventing backflow, one application is in airline. This will prevent water going in the air pumpSmile

I will use slide valve on your BD pipe line just before it enters the settlement. This will let you stop the water flow thru your drums for cleaning or maintenace. Now from your last drum back to pond you can either use ball valve or slide valve.

Hope these helpsSmile

Should I have some kind of valve to prevent water from the settlement chamber from flowing back into the pond in case the pump shuts down?

If you decide to use ball valves anywhere make sure you check the actual opening size. Most ball valves have a smaller hole in the ball than the pipe size and they create pressure restrictions. Check valves rely on the weight of the flapper or in some cases a light spring to work, so they also create a pressure restriction. Only use them if you have to.
