venturi without water pump? Can't Post

Hi frens,

I would like to do a venturi on my fibre tank. I saw many article about the diy venturi. i understand that we need a water pump for a venturi to work, n that will mean additional power unit.

I am just wondering can i use a normal elastic pipe and suck the water using my mouth redirect the out flow n thus making a gravity pull of water into the venturi pipe? can it work that way? Wondering is it powerful enough. Cos when I change the fibre tank water I too use a normal rubber pipe to suck out the dirt on the bottom floor.

hope it doesnt sound too stupidBlush

Hi Whelan, If I understand your question correctly. When sucking water from the same tank will not create a pressure differential between the inlet and the outlet ends of the pipe. There may be a chance of achieving your objective if water is supplied from another tank placed higher than your pond. To create a pressure differential point within a pipe that can draw in air requires quite a reasonable amount of pressure.

Hi,

Whelan and Chong

I have tried to create a venturi using water return by gravity but apparently the pressure different is still insufficient to suck in air from the atmosphere.

If the filter system is gravity fed, the pump in the last compartment may be just nice to fix the venturi. For those with pump fed system, I think using a higher rated pump and divert some water to filter back to the pond and use that diverted line to fix a venturi might then work as the pressure is very powerful - much more powerful than power head.

Whelan, Koifun method should be workable otherwise get a cheap powerhead. With powerhead pump you can push air as well as diverting the water wherever you want. There are wide ranges of powerheads available nowadays. Get the one that can adjust the flow rate with built-in venturi. All these prices range from only RM20 to RM80/= and as powerful as 2 meter high pressure or 2500l/hr.

Yes, buy those pumps that are built-in with venturis. I am presently using two 2000 litres/hr as venturis for my 8 feet FG with separate outlets diverted to the Trickle Tower. The presuure from the pumps are strong enough to create at least 1000(not that i count) bubbles for aeration as well as strong current for circulation. The pumps are only RM 43 per piece and are made in China.

so, we can get venturis, water for the TT and strong current by spending RM 86.

note: i hve also experimented with a 4500 litres/hr pump but the bubbles are not substancially more but this pump costs RM 290 per unit.

Go for this, unless you can afford a hi blow.

Matt, You are right. I find that these powerheads are more reliable too. So far, touch wood I have yet experience a burnt out powerhead. There are some wear & tear at the rotor shaft clutches sometimes. This can be fixed easily & spares are also available for sale.
Hi blow may be too strong for a FG tank application. There are also aquarium air pumps available but can cost as much as the powerheads. Moreover aqua air pumps are not as reliable becoz of the rubber diaphragm are easily torn.

    Chong,

If use Hiblow 40, you can divert some air to filter compartments leaving one outlet for the pond. The filter should be well aerated if there is excess air capacity.CheersSly

Tks Koifun, You are probably right the excess air from your hiblow 40 can be used for the filter chambers.
