HI,
If you are looking for DIY Tickle tower, you may find hundreds of it in the google search, try to review the same information in this forum (August 2004) with the title "TRIKLE TOWER DIY", I like the picture and designed by Ryan S.

hi

i went to the pages suggested and thank u for that. However can anybody tell me in a simple koi lover language how this trickle tower works and why is it more efficient (as suggested by the articles authors) than the normal bio-filter (is it?). i've notice both systems are using bio rings but one is fully submerged but the other is not. if its worth it i may add a trickle tower to my pond

In laymans terms, the purpose of a Trickle Tower (or Baki Shower) is to promote the growth of Aerobic Bacteria. Aerobic Bacteria (or Good Bugs as some people say) is the MAIN bacteria that keeps our pond water in prestine condition. Takes care of our Algae problem, Ammonia problem ... and processes the waste products in our pond.

You hear so much about Surface Area of a (Biological) Filtration System. That's because the first few inches of you Biological system (approx 6"-8") is where Most of your Aerobic Bacteria resides .. mainly because of the Oxygen Content. I like referring to this area as: "Live Water!" where as the further down you go, the "Deader" the water .. which mean less Oxygen!

The other Bacteria called "Anearobic (hope I spelled that right) Bacteria", or "Bad Bugs" live in this area. Where things begin to rot and deteriorate creating a breeding ground for diseases as well as releasing toxic gasses .. ie: methane gas.

Go to somebody's pond where they have a scum built up at the bottom of their pond or in their filtration system. Get a handful of this scum and smell it! Would you like to live in that mess?

As you can see: A trickle tower WOULD HAVE the bigger surface area where water would just run through and as in a Shower, the shower effect creates the bubbles which carries (gues what? ) OXYGEN! So even though the material is in a tuble like container, the water and the oxygen continually runs through it creating a DAMP but well Oxygenated environment. MORE SURFACE area for Aerobic bacteria to thrive in and multiply. NOTE: that this tower is NOT submerged underwater. If it is, you're defeating it's purpose.

I hope this makes sense.

Best Regards
Bran

THANKS Bran

now that really makes sense. everything goes to this phrase "MORE OXYGEN". one other thing, can we just use this type of filter without using the normal bio-filter (submerged media)?

Lot's of people seem to think that they can .... BUT ... I would still want a BIOLOGICAL filter or should I say a "Pre-Filter". The purpose of this pre-filter is to catch or trap the majority of the solids (Debrii, uneaten food, fish poo ..etc) so that it doesn't wind up in the Trickle Filter.

If you had to continually WASH the Trickle Filter, you would be washing away and destroying the Aerobic Bacteria. Sooo, the less you have to clean it, the better off .. or should I say "the more stable" you water will be.

Gotta go to sleep now, it's 1:30 am here in Hawaii.

thanks bran

i hope it's already daylite when you read this. So u are in Hawaii. How's Michelle Wee. Have u seen her play?. She has a lot of fan here in Malaysia. Back to koi, bran. I've noted what you stated on pre filter. if that the case i now intend to pump out the water from the filter (after all the medias) to the trickle tower and not the waterfall. the water will flow to the waterfall after going through the trickle tower. is it ok? now that i have that much bacteria can i add more fish. i have only five, the biggest is about 11". i have about 4700 liters of pond water.

Greetings,

Hi Branmuffin you are great. Your explaination was spot on.

I have a trickle tower system made from two plastic 55 gallons container and filled it with 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch daimeter pvc tubes which I cut from 5 meter pvc pipes. I then place on the top aluminium wash basins drilled with numerous holes. The wash basin is then stuffed with filter media and charcoal and acts as a prefilter and a shower head as well. The pond water is then pump into the wash basin and the outlet goes to the water fall. I then dose bacteria starter for about 3 to 5 weeks and presto!! it is working great.

Cheers

Sorry that I didn't get to this till now.

Thank (Mahalo) you for the nice compliment.

I see that you're a DIY kinda guy! Sly

I think that's just great since for the most part, you can't really get what you want. Many times, I've seen something that I think would work, BUT it's not quite what I wanted. Having the ingenuity to do it yourself will most often get you what you want.

Aloha!

Hi! Bran, I don't know whether my diy TT system is perfect or not?

1st chamber: green filter(reduce toxic content and in order to give my plants fertilizer)
2nd chamber: mechanical filter(filter dirty contents such as: shit & etc)
3nd chamber: TT system using trays with a lot of holes for air circulation(reduce amonia,No2,No3 and oxygen added)
4th chamber: biological filter(space for bacterial to live)

do you have any suggestions about this? thank you!
