4' minimum water depth for koi pond Can't Post

Hi,

I know the minimum recommended water depth for koi pond is 4feet. We have a few forumers here having shallow ponds including myself.

Recently, I have seen some really shallow ponds of 1feet deep! and yet the kois are big (between 1'-2') ....but not giant size, and healthy looking.

Any sifu care to comment on this?

Thanks!

Hi Epal63,

What is the size of yr pond?
I hav a small pond size 4' L x 8' W x 2' H with 7-8pcs kois (local breed), now only keep gold fish.
The biggest koi size was 2ft, others r around 1.5ft, and those fish age is more than 5years....

Another pond is 12' x 8' x 3', I also want to know currently how big will the fish grow in a 3ft deep pond?

Hi Chris,

My pond size is 18'Lx5'Wx2.5'H. Filter is an additional 30% of the pond size, ie 6'Lx5'W'2.5'H. My pond is only 2 months old, so I am not sure how big the koi will grow. I think 1.5' length would be excellent for my pond size. Any bigger will probably look a bit odd for a small pond like mine.Tongue

Your pond's length is good, width could have been better (preferably 8'-10') and definitely too shallow (yes, minimum 4').

If your filtration is good and the water well maintained, growth isn't a problem as long as the koi is well fed. However, body conformation may be compromised as your koi gain in size because your pond lacks the depth (water pressure) to sustain a big koi's frame and weight.

I've a small pond as well (but my filter is about 2/3 the size of my pond)... 12' x 8' x 4.5' and I've 3 koi over 80cm all grown from tosai. The smaller ones (50-70cm) are mostly males. My last purchase was in Oct 07... 2 15cm tosai kohaku that's about 47-48cm now.

Hi Dennis, thanks for the advice. My pond depth is constraint by an underground sewage pipe. Thus 2.5' deep was the max I could go.

Wow, I am impressed that your kohaku could grow by 1' within 7 months! I notice that kohaku tends to grow faster than other types like Ogon. Is this generally true?

Hi Epal,

AFAIK, kohaku generally do not grow as fast as uni-coloured koi (Benigoi, Ogon etc... not to mention Chagoi). Metallic and doitsu are even slower.

I've had an Izumiya Ogon, a 50cm nisai kept at a dealer's big pond that sprung to 77cm in less than a year. Unfortunately, there was a outbreak of disease at the dealer's premises which took some beauties to koi heaven, including my Ogon Frown. Koi's growth generally slows in its 2nd to 3rd year, so my Ogon's growth rate during that time was quite extraordinary. Also. my Chagoi bought less than 30cm hit 80cm in its 3rd year in my small pond.

I'm expecting the 2 young kohaku to reach 60cm by Oct 08, probably 70cm+ Oct 09, and just may reach 80cm by Oct 10... if not, defnitely sometime in 2011. I know of a local hobbyist whose Rainbow offspring bought at 55cm (nisai) hit 80cm as a sansai Shocked.

Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

My observation is that my Kohaku tends to eat more during the feeding compared to the Ogon. I see them grow faster than the Ogon. I wonder if this is an isolated case?Crazy

I agree that the metalic grows even slower.

Hi Dennis,

I have to take back my words! Crazy and agree with you. My ogon has surpassed my kohaku in length!
