Bioballs Plastic. Best used for trickle tower/filter applications. Higher surface area than lava rocks. Light. Should not be cleaned at all. Takes biological bacteria longer to cling to this media than lava rock. Bacteria House Marketed by Momotary I believe. Made from ceramic. Used in high volume turn over trickle tower application. Lava rock Possibly made from left over burnt coal pieces from what I researched and is available from most landscaping stores. Low surface area compared to these other two medias. Can be used in trickle tower and submerged biological filtration. Heavy. Hard to clean. Allows biological bacteria to easily cling to and cycle filter is shorter period of time than bioballs.
