Backup power for pond Can't Post

I started koi pond hobby about 6 months ago. It is very wonderful experience to learn all the basics and finally get everything right.

However, my area are just prone to heavy lightning strike which causing my circuit breaker to trip. This mean no electricity to the pond which mean the motor is dead.

This happen once, when my wife and I were out at work. There was a thunderstorm in the morning and causing the circuit breaker to cut off the power supply. I lost 15 kois because of this.

Have anyone knows how to counter this problem?

Thanks

Hello Rahim,

I had the similar problem earlier. What I did was :-

1) I change the circuit breaker to one that is less sensitive. Please check with your wiring contractor. They may be able to get you one.

2) I practically saw off all the pointed facing steel surrounding my house. I had a feeling that those pointer steel attract a fare bit of lighting.

3) I also purchased a backup system from one of the local fish dealer that is powered by two big lorry battery. This backup system is able to keep the high blow air compressor on for several hours. Whenever the circuit breaker trip, the backup system will come into action but the backup will only power the air compressor, not the water pump.

Hope that help Smile

Hi Rahim

I used to loose sleep over the same issue. But now I have practically solve the problem in the following manner :-

1) I have moved by fused box and circuit breaker outside. This is to enable my to pass only my gate key to my neighbour when I travel away for a long holiday. What my neighbour will do is to help me to switch on the circuit just incase it trip. Check once a day.

2) Whenever I am about to travel, I will starve my koi for several days to keep the water clean. In this way, even when there is no power, you fish should be able to stay alive for a days or two.

3) Ensure that your pond is not overstock.

Sleepness night is now a history to me as far as koi is concern. Smile

Hi,

I won't work on a less sensitive circuit breaker as reducing the sensitivity will increase the danger and damage when there is a electrical leakage, either from your household appliances or even when the lightning strikes. If there is a short-circuit and the circuit breaker does not trip, it may be lethal! In addition, with all pond equipment (pumps, lights and blowers), the risk of short circuit due to ingress of water into electrical joints is HIGH. Don't compromise.

Guess there is no "short-cut" to this matter. Either you get a friend or neighbour to help you or you have to invest on a UPS(Uninterrupted Power Supply) to run a air blower when there is a power failure.

Thanks cch and NPK,

I did not get enough sleep when I was in Ipoh visiting my mother in-laws. Luckily, when I got back nothing happen except all my koi were very very hungry.

One regret is I couldn't find the Onn Lok Aquarium addressed at Jln Bendahara, Ipoh.
I was looking for it for two days and still couldn't locate it.

Anyone of you know about this koi dealer. It was listed in Malaysia koi club.

Thanks
