Disappearing fish Can't Post

I had a fish disappear on me. I just recently constructed my pond and added fish about 1 month ago. I like in the city, so besides cats I figured predators weren't going to be too much of an issue. I noticed one day that one of my koi (about 5") was no where to be found. DOH! My first though was that it must have been a cat. But today we identified the culprit. It was hanging out on my fence looking into the pond. We tried to take a picture, but it flew off when we opened the door. I found this pic online, unmistakingly the same bird, a California native called a Snowy Egret. I have never seen such a beautiful bird around my house. I guess "If you build it, they will come." After that gourmet meal I'm sure it'll be returning. So now what am I supposed to do?

Shoot him Pirate no not really, just cover your pond with a net for a while and when the bird see's he cant get a meal anymore he will leave and not come back. You could also string fishing line across your pond and it does not look to bad and just leave it for a while, only problemo here is you might find the bird hung up in the fishing line. If you want to get rid of him and not shoot him this might be a ideaCrazy I did not say that thoughWink some bird lovers might get mad at mePirate

Nets are the best and the most human way to keep birds out of your pondWink

Good luck

Or you may consider to catch it, then:
- put it in a cage, now you have another pet
- sell it to the pet shop
- sell it to some asian people, they may want to have it for dinner.Laugh

Happy new year.

Aaah! Two more fish are gone. I just got back from a mountain bike ride and went to check on my fish and two more are missing. Now I'm missing 1 koi and 2 goldfish. Where can I get some netting? I've gotta take care of this ASAP.

Netting can be bought from hardware stores, fishing stores, heck even clothing material stores.

I have been attacked by predatory birds. Once they find your pond they will completely eat every fish until you have none. Do it now, save their lives!!!

For a temporary fix use giant wood planks...anything for goodness sake!ShockedAngelicAngelic

Jonc...

Better act quick buddy....once they get the taste they will come back more....

netting is basically strecting the net over the pond like so:

hardware store quality is ok....but not very good against mammal preditors such as racoons. oposums....etc where they can just easily rip the netting open...Unsure

if you can't find the heavy duty stuff......that's ok.....jsut stick with the hardware store stuff and maybe double or triple layer it over the pond...Tongue

Make sure you secure the netting heavily at the bottom on the outside. This summer a blue heron pushed aside my netting and got a big Sarassa comet from our fiberglass tank. That was the first time he got smart enough to do that in three years!

I set up a barricade using an EZ-UP canopy and criss-crossed rope along the poles. Hopefully that will keep him out until I can something more decent looking. Thanks for the help.

Hello, apart from ptting a net over your pond, if you can make the water line higher or in other words make your pond deeper this problem will stop! Their legs are only so long, so if he cant stand in your pond, he cant hunt! I think a net is so ugly, and when possible we should try to find other means!

Hello, I would try to find a NICE way to solve the problem, but if your losing this many fish, Then its WAR on the bastards, This is now a time that you can become creative, and evil! Kill the bastards! There are always plenty of lakes where they can eat fish!

Re: [mrchewbeaverkoi] Disappearing fish [In reply to] Can't Post

wow sucks to be you, try this...

-put up netting over the pond, make sure it is well secured...
-put up a crane statue or two believe it or not many cranes are territorial and will not hunt in an area with more cranes.
-Get a paint ball gun and some plastic pellets. Paint is messy.
-move the fish. No fish,no food for crane. Crane leaves.Bring fish back. Problem solved.
- Shoot it. Make sure its not protected....
-Get a water gun, like a super soaker or something.
-I've had a friend pen up his (small dog) near the pond. barks and scares crane. Make sure it is friendly around fish. Don't have a dog? Barrow one...lol.
-Get a noise maker. make sure it does not scare fish. most fish like music though...mine like The Pillows...lol.
-keep scaring it away, eventually i'll get the idea, 'hey food is too much trouble here' and leave. hopefully.
-fountains sometimes keep cranes away. works for me. I have a demon cat, works VERY well....lol fish like it too.
-Ive seen people put glass pannels over the pond. keeps animals off, and makes a very good funny video for AFV...lol

If those don't work your SOL buddy. Hope your luck improves.
