HELP!! dissolved oxygen????? Can't Post

Hi There.... I posted this in another room. But I am hoping I would get some answers here.

My pond has been running fine for the last 6 months.

ph is 7.7
amonia -0
nitrite -0
nitrate - is at the lowest. not zero, next to zero... I forgot. (I use tetra)

water is crystal clear.

pond is 5,500 gallons. filter system is 2,000 gallons (7,500 gallon total) 6 feet deep.

I have 20 kois.

I have a 100 watts resun pump which runs 3 aerators in my pond.
and a 80 watts aerator for my filter system for the japanese matts.

here is my problem...

we have to shut down the electricity in my house for a few minutes.
when I went to my pond I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE that my fish were floating sideways.

I panicked and we have to switch back the electricity in the house. after that all the fish were fine again.

WHAT HAPPENED?????????? I don't understand...how can my fish be ready to croak because of no aerator...I think it was like in 5 to 10 minutes of no power.

We had a terrible storm here in The Philippines and we didn't have electricity for 8 days.
8 DAYS!!!! all I did was not feed the koi's and they were all fine. everybody survived.

But now...just 5 to 10 minutes of no aerator they were ready to turn belly up.

please help......what is going on?

THIS HAPPENED LIKE 3X NOW... HELP!!!!

I have two 60 cm kois
and the rest are from 34 cm to 46 cm

pond maintenance.

I clean my settlement chamber EVERYDAY. I pull out the stand pipe and let water out for 5 minutes.

I add water EVERYDAY. 1 inch of water is added everyday in the morning.

Mikoi,

I've seen your pond and filter set-up a few months ago in this forum site, while i'm trying to engulf all the information i can before building my pond(smallBlush), and have been admiring yours since thenSmile (wish i set up mine the way you did... budget constraintsMad) and any pond couldn't get anything better than yours.

for you to have that kind problem and as you said 3x it has happened, would be close to impossible for me(newbie)! but since you did, i think you'd better try to eliminate some of this possibilities to really find the culprit:
- water parameters: did you have a chance to check water parameters during the time of incident? High Ammonia, Nitrite may cause it.
- Have you suffered any parasite, bacterial or fungal outbreak on your your koi or other fish in your pond as of the late (before the incident)? it may have weakend them. just to add, have you checked if anything died inside the pond (not the koi's, i mean a rodent, frogs, etc.)?
- Salt in your pond? salt decreases DO in the pond. Temperature? High Temp of above 85F also decreases level of DO in the Pond. very hot weather were having right now!Crazy
- Water Quality of the water (Tap or deep-well) that you add everyday to your pond, does it contain any toxins that could be harmful? chlorine from tap water would be fatal to fish.
- any chemical, soap, fertilizer spilled inside your pond accidentally as of the late? better ask the help (politely, i mean)?
- any odd behaviours you observed with your koi's? that's a very good early warning sign, if somethings bothering them.

Remembering your filter set up, you have also a TT installed, very effective for water degassing and additional biofilter, and your 2 air pumps continually supplying air throughout the system, i think you have no issue with DO in your pondUnsure.

i think it might be something in the water, just try to backtrack everything up to the day it has first occured. because as you said, after turning back the power, everything went back to normal, your filter system may have eliminated the culprit, it may have dilluted it in the whole filter process.

just pray no brown-outs for now!!!Frown

mikoi,

Apart from what Albert had mentioned...
Would you know the water temp before you turned off the power??? I know the climate in the Phils is very warm atm. Other thing I can think of is PH swings since you've been having a lot of rain. More O2 will help the PH stable or increase to normal rangeSmile Definately something in the waterCrazy

Hello Aguygongco and Koi38,

The only culprit I could see right now is..... THEY ARE ALWAYS FULL!

Since we are not supposed to feed our kois during power outages.
makes it hard for them to breath and digest their food, am I right?

My kois are very active and begs for food constantly, sometimes I don't
even want to go out and check on them because of the non stop feeding.

Should I reduce the number of my kois in my pond? I'm thinking of selling 5 of them
to bring it down to 15. Sifu Mike Hernandez told me I should only have atleast 8 kois
in my pond for maximize growth.

I bought some kois last September at 6 inches. today they are at 13 inches
and still growing.

-
it too could be a factor, but not really because its hard for them to digest it, (man, it just goes out, even before they finish what you just gave themSly) but rather, your filter system is not running and its not nitrifying the ammonia that the fishes have excreted during the power outage, and other mechanical and biological process is not being done (No water circulationUnsure) . giving you Ammonia and Nitrite readings in the water, which will just compound problems in your pondPirate. So definitely, no feeding during Brown-outs. And better if you give them small amounts of food at 5-6x daily, rather than big amount at lesser frequency. so that they'll have a chance to digest and discharge it Unimpressedand more importantly give your filter system a better time to do its job properly, until the next feeeding time.

My kois are very active and begs for food constantly, sometimes I don't
even want to go out and check on them because of the non stop feeding.

- for me, natural behavior! they're always hungry!TongueFrown and begging for food.

Should I reduce the number of my kois in my pond? I'm thinking of selling 5 of them

- a good idea, first to ease up on your filter loadCool, and more income!CoolCoolCool better nitrifying action by your filter, lesser koi's to take care of and worry about. it's up to you sir!Wink

but still, definately something in the water that gives that kind of irritation to your koi's. I think if you could have access to medical labs which performs water quality and potability checks in your area, better have your water checked by them. just to give you peace of mind that there is definately no toxic substance in the water.

till next post

mikoi,

I missed the part having no power for 8days. Your benificial bacteria was massively reduced due to no flow of food/water for them to process/convert. To achieve 0 on Nitrate you must have either TT ot BS. From infos I've gathered it's nearly impossible to achieve 0 NO3, imhoWink Check your water temp and if it above 20deg C then that tell you why your koi are active coz they motabilism is high and need to feed. You can give them few pellets per day.

Check you kH, low reading of kH can contribute to PH swings and can irritate your koi worst can kill them. Adding O2 will increase PH that's why when you turn your air back ON they went back to normal behavior. Keep an eye on you NO3 - having reading to 20ppm> is safe and tells you that bio bugs are colonising again, IMHOSmile

Good luck mikoi and keep us postedAngelic

Jon

Re: [Koi38] HELP!! dissolved oxygen????? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Koi38,

the power outage for 8 days happened last year when my pond was only 2 months old.
8 days no electricity but all my fish survived.

now KH... that is something I ignored and have no idea about it HAHAHAHA
I have seen test kits of KH and maybe it's about time to get one.

I constantly check my water parameters and log it every time.

ever since I built my pond my parameters have never changed to this day.
they are:

ammonia =zero
Nitrite = Zero
Nitrate = 12.5 mg/l (TETRA)
PH = 7.7

I sometimes even wonder why I bother check the parameters since they never change.

mikoi,

Kh is carbonate hardness, where the biological activity is strong and there is a significant fish load the Kh will slowly drop can can eliminate the entire koi. Doc Johson lost his entire herd yrs ago coz of low kH. When you get lots of rain(acidic), the acid will eat up your kH and what will happend is your filter will stop working Ph will drop suddenly stressing your fish to death. That's the only thing I can think of of what happened when you turn the power off. As I said air will keep PH stable tooSmile

Just my 2 centsTongue

Jon
