Health Check/Maintenance for Koi Can't Post

Hi all,

I've been searching for more info on koi health, so that a maintenance 'program' can be developed.

I've came across quite a no of different practices:

1. Salt Bath koi when they have sign of unwell.
2. Do PP bombing in pond regularly, like every 2-3 mths.
3. Inject Anti-biotics into koi showing sign of unwell.
4. Maintain a higher Salt level in their pond.
5. Yearly drying up of filter.
6. Some depend on their own home-made 'secret' paste.

maybe you can share your own practices that you have been using and works well for you.

I disagree with action no .5 "yearly drying up of filter" because the filter is home to the bacteria that convert the waste products of your pond and fish, drying the entire filter will kill the bacteria that do the waste conversion, so that your pond will have to eventually restart the nitrogen cycle that will then see the water parameters spike in nitrite and ammonia levels for weeks until it restabilizes.

Simply unnecessary!Pirate

Hi Koinutx,
Koi health is all depends on what you put inside the pond. The primary factor is water. If you pay more attention to upkeep the quality of water in optimum condition such as balance of Ph, regular testing/maintain on water parameter especially nitrogen cycle, temperature and balance diet, keep the filter clean and active, I would say you will encounter almost no problem at all. Koi health is always depend on how we maintain the water. Good water will boost koi health and recovery. Sounds easy but take a lot of reading in this forum to study/ask cifu and apply the correct one. You should be alright! Wink

I feel like such a bad owner, even though I've only had my koi for a few days and it's only local bred with absolutely no show qualities because of a few random spots and only being a few inches, I don't take care of it nearly as well as people describe in this form.

It's in a 40 gallon pond (yes I know waaaaaay too small for it) and all that is in the pond is and algae stop block thing and a small fountain that circulates the water. We clean out the water and replace it very month or two, but still no where near good enough.

I'm a bad koi owner. I can't wait to move out to get a pond and filtration system good enough to raise koi. I love my little koi to death.

Yoo Mr President,

That's why we are water keepers not koi keepers, coz we look after the water and koi will look after themselvesTongue

Hi, I fully agreed that keeping koi, is just as 'simple' as keeping the water.Tongue

That's why looking at some form of maintanence programme to be developed. Taking care of the nitrogen cycle is the fundamental, simple but yet not easy to master.
The difficult part is to be able to prevent/detect any potential spike in ammonia, nitrite or nitrate situation, which can be deadly to the koi.

Koinutx,
Everybody pond is different and you may need to do trial and error to find out which one best suit yours. I am not sure how big is your pond but make sure you have a relatively big bio-media to house the bacteria in order to combat ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Detection is by water testing. Preventing is by how much bio-media you have to cultivate bacteria; the amount of food given to the koi and how you keep your water relatively fresh.
Forum has a lot of answers and you just need to spend some time to go through. The concern has been iteratively repeating itself and so you will find duplicate effort in explaining. Happy reading though! Wink

Re: [sunshinekoi] Health Check/Maintenance for Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi, Thanks for replying.

My is a 8ton pond in S'pore, with a small 3 chambers for backflush, filter mat in 2nd, and 3rd is for 2 pump at 15k l/hr each. The size is about 5-10% to the whole pond.

I've a 3 tier tray housing about 60kg of Bateria house, and 1000pcs of Bioball. (Flow rate is 15k l/hr). Backflush is done every 2-3 days.

I guess my system should be good enough at the moment, for 10 koi at 30-40+ cm. (feeding at 5 times per day.)

I came across a few hobbyists who have good water quality, crystal clear, and zero nitrite. but they do face occasional fish died for no obvious reason. The fish will just turn 'motionless' for 1-2 days, and died. Not sure was it due to the tap water we are using over here that have long term adverse effect on the fish.

Re: [koinutx] Health Check/Maintenance for Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Koinutx,
Looking back your topic, I think I am misunderstood. Line 1, 3,6 is all dependent on the condition of Koi and shouldnt be a maintenance thing. I dont think you should do it regularly.
Line 2 is only if your water condition and koi showing early sign of unwell, then maybe apply but this can be remedies by maintaining water quality. Line 4 I have not put any salt in the pond. If your water is good, I dont see any reason on adding salt. Line 5, I need your help to shade some light as to what reason you want to dry up your filter yearly, not unless the pond is suffering from parasite or disease and the filter is not maintained.
Since you are using BH and with high turn over rate, I would say flush your drain daily and overflow your water slight amount everyday will do a clean job. Of course not to forget conditioning your water prior to put them into the pond.

Again,
Some part of the reason for doing the below is due to water quality issue and like Jon said earlier, look after the water and the koi will look after themselves.

Re: [sunshinekoi] Health Check/Maintenance for Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Sunshine,

Those 6 items are what I came across some hobbyists are doing/ or thru mag reading. I'm not practising them at the moment.
maybe I elaborate more on their actions.

1 - Salt bath
They will take the koi out and do the salt bath at a regular interval of 3-4 months, as a preventive method for any parasite.

2 - PP bombing
That is a regularly event to do a PP bomb every 3 mth to the pond. And the intend is to be used as a preventive method for killing parasite, if any.

3 - Inject Anti-Biotic
This is perform on big koi, more than 70cm, every year, to improve its immune system

4 - Maintain a higher salt content
By maintaining the salt content to a certain level, it was intend to reduce the risk to parasite.

5 - Yearly drying up of filter.
Agreed that this is as good as starting new. This is also a preventive method to reduce the risk of parasite growing in the filter.

6 - Food Paste
Some made paste with medication(anti-biotic) and feed the koi regularly to upkeep the immune system.

Above are what I came across thru hobbyists, or mag reading. I'm not fully understood the rational behind some of these activities.

Personnally, method 2 is something I belived might be useful, for method 5, one year period may be too short, maybe I will do it every 1.5-2 years.
method 1 & 4, I'll only use it as a treatment, rather than a preventive method, as I believed if the fish is long term in salt water, Salt treatment will not be effective anymore, when the fish get sick.

for method 3, I do not have enough knowledge to comment or adminster it.

Hi Koinutx,
Many Thanks for your clarification. Those practices, I have not done any. If I have not maintained my water, I might try one of them.
