Hi on young koi Can't Post

Famous Japanese breeders do not feed color enhancing foods to koi younger than 4 years old so that it doesn't ruin their future potential. Is it true? I feed my koi which are under 4 years old spirulina and koi supplemented food. If I were to feed them this throughout the year in an indoor tank, would this adversely effect their hi in the future? Has this been proven? Anyone who has experienced this with their collection of young koi?

Hi on young koi [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear 'Hi-on-young-koi', I have been a koi hobbyist for 8 years. I do not think it is true that Japanese koi keepers do not feed their koi with colour enhancers before their koi are 4 years old. I have not read or heard about these from other koi keepers before. I feed my 4 inch koi with a mixture of wheatgerm and spirulina and they all grew up well and very colourful. To achieve full potential in growth and beauty, ideally the koi should have plenty of room to swim in good quality water and given good nutritious food.

Thank you for your reply. I read this in Peter Waddington's magazine "Nishikigoi." Peter is famous in the UK for koi. He did state that well-known breeders do not feed their tosai color additive foods. Also, I spoke to a member in my club who expressed the same views as yours. He feeds his koi spirulina enhanced food all year round and doesn't notice any difference.
