I'm in the UK and am currently building my pond. However, the UK is having atrocious rain at the moment and basically as soon as I dug the hole at the end of June it filled up with water. From about 20cm down the soil is clay though and is retaining the water... so I have a DIY mud pond until the rain stops! The pond is 1.8x2.7 and the water is about 40 cm deep. After some careful testing I put four small goldfish in the water, and no bodies floated up either More recently I bought a 5" chagoi and put him in the pond. I haven't seen him since! Clearly mud ponds are a better growth environment for koi than clear ponds and are low-stress, so would it be worth getting another little koi and keeping him in the pond for a while? Its supposed to rain until the end of August so they'd have an opportunity to grow a fair bit, hopefully?
