Gel...

Welome to the forum....

Koi fry have barbels right fromteh start....maybe just too small you can't see'em....Tongue

Yes the barbel make them differ from one another...

Green sheen.....I don't think so for this one...

At the size of koi fry....they are pretty much same as comets.....but I think most koi fry have a slightly more tubed body shape then typical comets which have a more flat body when viewed from the top...however...this may not be always true since indviduals differ...CrazyLaugh

I think once the fry has reached about 2 inches you can clearly tell if it's koi or comet..Smile.

mrchewbeaverkoi...

Sorry but what's mustar???CrazyBlush

Yes....store do label them....and bigger koi you can obviously tell.....but I've seen many fish places label wrong type of fish...

Some obviously different individuals are placed with other types of fish.....like puting comets with koi and selling them at the price of koi!!!!Mad

Inexperienced people will just get ripped off...Unsure

Yeah, many places mix koi with comets.

I picked up a beat up 2" koi that's silver & skinny. It had missing scales & the other fish were biting it. The price was right but I didn't have anywhere to put it, so I used a rubbermaid 2gal with airstone.

Are koi fins more circular?

I don't know if koi fry are more broad shouldered...

Gel...

Hi there.....how much was the little fry?

About the other fish biting your koi.....that is not usually a good sign.....ususally sick fish secrete mucus and when other fish smell it they may start to chase down and nibble at the sick one...Unsure

Have good water quality and proper care and it should be fine....Tongue For one small koi....the 2 gal tub is ok for now.....that is until it grows up....it will eventually need a bigger home....Laugh

No it is not neccessary that koi fin are more circular......but usually female koi have more round fins compared to males...Wink

Koi fry.....that are freshly hatched have board front end and narrow tails....as they grow, the tail grow thicker.....

BTW: what food do you have for it?

Jarvis

I got the koi for a steal, it was labelled wrong! I want to get a lot more of these guys down the road.

I don't normally buy weak fish but this was too good to pass up.

Another thing I noticed was they were selling small koi for $7 & the larger koi for $4!
I think the signs fell down & were put back wrong. But there was a metallic smaller koi that I wanted but when I went back a week later it was gone. None of the larger koi's color looked great.
But my tanks weren't cycled yet anyway.

My fantail died in the 69gal. I think it was sick for a few weeks. It was hemorraging, bloated belly, lathargic. I put it in a petcarrier, inside the tank, but maybe not enough oxygen got to it.
There is green algae bloom but my 2 comets in there are thriving. They are much more hardy.

I have wardleys or some cheap floating pellets & flakes that came with my 55gal setup.
& I just bought tetrafin flakes.

My fish love peas, bitter melon

they hate: lemon, lettuce

so koi fry have narrower tails then comets? cause my koi fry has a real skinny tail!

Gel...

I've encountered the same situation before....went to a petstore's fish department....where they have comets in this big thank for sale....but after about 5 minutes looking at the little comets...I found a tiny butterfly Showa amongst them!!!Tongue
It was obviously a koi....Tongue

I didn't buy it cause i Don't like butterflies......it was priced for $2 Can with the comets...Laugh

Really sorry about the fantail buddy.....Unsure I think koi are much more hardy and fun to keep...

Yes comets generally are hardier than fancy goldfish......the algea may not look good in the tub, but they are a good suppliment food to the fish...Tongue

Wow...bitter melons....Are they really ok for fish....CrazyLaughI've never heard of this....I know I eat that stuff...lol

I think at birth, all koi and comets look similar with thin tails....but as they change, the comet develope flatter sides while koi develope a more tube shape....tail thickness varies....hard to say....Wink

Yeah, if you look hard enough, you might find great deals on fish.
I want like 20 more baby koi!

Thanks. The fantail went downhill over night. I think it was a combo of factors. But the LFS offered me a replacement, no charge.

My comets haven't started eating the algae yet. The water is cloudy. I scrape some off so I can see the fish.

The koi sometimes eat the bittermelon (asian melon, looks sorta like corn) but tire of it quick.

time for sleep

Sylvester

Sylvester...

You're pretty luckly to have a replacement....most places in my area state that they refuse any exchanges, refunds, or replacements...Crazy

But i guess they need a living....can't just replace for everyone...Tongue

Comets should no be as fond of algea as koi is....but if they're hungry they will start to nibble on the wallsLaugh

Can you feed Bitter melon a lot? Cause I eat it a lot of the timeLaughLaughLaugh

Most of the big chains offer refunds within 15days.

My algae is clouding the water a lot. I can’t even see the fish or the bottom of the tank.
I think it has to be moved away from the window.

My koi ate a lil of the bittermelon but not a lot.

Hey
I hesitate to replace a lot of the water cause the Emp400 is hard to prime with low water level.

But I think I need a 50% water change.
I’d love to get a 55-90gal long, so I can sell the 75 tall.
I regret selling my 55. It was on sale for $150, that includes 2 hood lights, whisper60, heater @ pet c. Now its not on sale anymore!

The 55 long was a lil narrow so 75-90 would be nice.

Gel..

I agree with the water change....however if you're doing a 50% change....do it gradually.....30% water change should be the max that you do at a time...

if you do the 50% at once....very dangerous as the fish may not adjust fast enough...Crazy

Try 30% today....wait a day and do the other 20%...Tongue

yes, that's what I do basically.
I think I'm overstocked too.
but the green algae shouldn't be harmful to goldfish.

In a 25ish gal sterilite plastic container, I have 2 small comets & 2 koi.

I'm looking at 75ish gal tanks now. I might sell my 140gal 6' tank cause it's kind of too huge...Although it would
be good if my koi get that big...

But with the 75, the accesories will be a lot cheaper.

My 10 gal has 1 fantail, elodea & 3 small snails.
QT bucket has 1, 3cm fantail, no filter. It just hides under the airstone.
I need a hidey cave then I can transfer it to the 10gal.

sory i don't know how spell it right in English but it the little 2 hairs on the top of the comet is look ugly, i like koi because those thing grow near the koi mouth bend downward, and it also true that koi body are more tube look like but comet they are more flat almost like a diamond square shape. I rather keep Pirana than comet do you know that most people in the USA usually feed comet or goldfeeder to meat eater fishes? those feeder goldfish or comet don't last too long during cold winter, out side if u have smallpond i remeber my old house i usually have a bunch of them and the rather die out within the first of sendcond winter season koi are lot easier to live through winter than comet.

Mrchewbeaverkoi...you wouldn't want a Piranha because you can hand feed them (with your own hands perhaps Tongue).
