King fisher bird Can't Post

HI,

I m new here. I hv just got my pond done and have throw in a few gold fish to test the water. Initially i bought bout 15 small gold fishes on my 14000 liter pond and some plant.

Everything went smoothly until last few days, my dad told me he heard King Fisher ... so i went to check my pond, and 1 fish gone the rest was so scare.

This morning i checked on the number of the fish again, it left bout 8. The only explanation on the missing fish could be the king fisher even tho we never seen it come close to the pond.

What should i do?

p/s: Sly my pond is doing alrite, no green water and theres algae on the pond wall Smile

Hello, there are many things you can do, Undrestand the KING FISHER has just found a safe place to get FREE fish, so he will be back. You can go hunting!!!! you can put a 6 inch pvc tube on the bottom of the pond so the fish can hide, you can put some type of flags that blow in the wind to scare the bird or you can put some type of netting over the pond.

just a suggestion, you can put fishing line over your pond and the birds will not go past it, put poles on both sides of the pond and tie fishing line across it put them higher than your head so you dont run into them.

Netting and fishing line both work well for KingFishers, but for Cranes and Herons you'll need to have them near the pond rather than high above it.
For myself, if I have to choose between an occasional dead bird or loosing fish to a live bird... I'll choose to keep my fish safe every time.Smile

I understand your situation. I don't like the looks of netting or fishing line either, but in some situations they are a necessary evilUnsure . My personal preference is to kill 2 birds with one stoneTongue (but no birds have to die this wayWink)
Since most ponds benefit from partial shade to keep them cooler and minimize algae growth, a pergola over the pond or possibly a simple shade sail covering the pond provide you with 2 benefits. They provide shade and block the view and flight path for Kingfishers and other predatory birds without diminishing the appearance of the pond.

I saw pics of your pond. You did have a net over them. I don't like nets myself because they do look ugly, but they work.

Other suggestions would be fishing line. The fishing line has to be strung across your raised stone work about 5 inches apart. I don't know how large of a kingfisher you have, but this spacing has to be small enough that the bird will be too afraid to swoop down. I heard that birds with their good eyesights can see the fishing line. It just comes down to judgment, can it be enter and leave without getting caught in the line. Herons and storks will usually fly and land near, then walk in. Kingfisher will dive in and fly up with the fish prey in one swoop. So it's up to you about the spacing. I don't know if your blocks are cemented down, but if they are not, then you can wrap and try the fishing lines around the blocks before putting it back in its place. Otherwise you have to build a frame or set up a whole bunch of pegs or screws. That's a lot of work.

The other suggestion is to build a pergola so birds flying overhead will not notice a pond beneath them with fish for food. There's no guarantees on this one. Plus there's a lot of labour or/and cash involved in making a pergola.

The other option, is to grow more lilies. It's more natural looking. It will keep the fisher cooler during the day b/c they can hide underneath. It also gives them some protection (visually) from predators. But there's no guarantees on this one.

It's often a combination that will give you the best protection. Nets are the best, but they sure are ugly.

If you live in a place with pressurized water, then you might consider this:
Scarecrow motion-sensitive (PIR) sprinkler water repeller

I think it's too slow for a bird that's small and fast like a Kingfisher, but awesome for herons, storks, cats, dogs, raccoons

Short-term intense, (obsessive) hard work to long-term laziness.

Stunning bird.

No idea what your pond looks like but a Heron is usually only a problem for guys with shallow ponds as the heron usually walks into the water to grap a bite.
