Koi and trauma Can't Post

Last May, 1998, my Koi were apparently traumatized by an attack by an osprey that took my adult female that had just spawned just two weeks earlier. The remaining four adult Koi went into hiding for the rest of the summer months and remained in hiding till today. They have been hiding in a stack of old tires place in the pond when it was built to give the fish a chamber of protection against preying river otters that live in a nearby creek.

Today the water temperature was at 60 degrees, yet the fish had not come out from hibernation or trauma, I know not which, until I removed the stack of tires and they appeared to be normal.

Have you heard of Koi reacting so strongly to such an experience?

Will they ever casually feed and bask at the surface again as they did prior to the osprey attack?

Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

Regards,

John McMillan

I had a similar experience 4 months ago. I tried from starving them to changing all kinds of "good" food I can think of. It didn't help till I introduced 2 chagoi. I am not sure if it works for you but I learn this trick from a koi vet.

Koi and trauma [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,

In my early stage of keeping koi, my kois normally stay clear of water surface whenever I go near the pond, even when there food floating.

After I introduce a chagoi, even is still small then, about 8", which is already feeding from hand, the attitude of koi changed within a few days. For the last several years, my chagoi, without fail is always the first koi come to the surface for food and the rest of the koi will follow.

From the expert information learnt from books, chagoi seems to be the easiest to tame. They also grow faster than the rest. It seems to me that all ponds needed one or two of these to stabilise the rest. Chagoi is sometimes seen as a "natural leader" among the rest of the koi.

Regards.
