Mass spawning and fry deaths, water quality.. Can't Post

Hi,
I had a mass spawning in my pond and put the pond water into the containers, then put the eggs in there that were attached to the plants...it "seems" that there were a lot of unfertilized eggs that fouled the water and killed a whole bunch of fry..what did I do wrong? For the past two years I have had one female to spawn, and raised fry with miminal problems..I had "four" females to spawn this year..the pond water is just awful and I have been working on it, first a 50% change of water, then 10% water changes and have scooped out millions of unfertilized eggs...I "was" able to save one container of fry's..so far so good with them..Don't know if this is posted in the right section, but since it was both breeding "and" quality of water..I posted here...any tips would be appreciated..should I have not taken the pond water into the containers?
thanks

My theory is that the "spawned" water that you took in to house the eggs in may have had higher than normal levels of ammonia and nitrite (as a result of the milt from the original water). This may have caused the numbers of death you mention.

Do you put anything additional into the egg/fry containers?

A precycled sponge filter will be of great help to the water quality of the fry tanks if you can use them inside the tanks.

Hi Koiguyoz,
I had air stones set up..I did the same thing I've done for two years, but I think it is what you said about the higher than normal levels of ammonia and nitrite (as a result of the milt from the original water.) Makes total sense to me.. I had never had multi laying of eggs before...well, next year when they spawn if all four of them spawn again, what should I do? What should I do to prepare for the eggs? Right now the pond is just a mess...and this is day five cleaning up after the Koi after they spawned...The pond "is" looking better and only a 'hint' of odor left..so, I am getting there on cleaning the pond..I was able to salvage one container full of hatched koi..they are doing fine so far and this is day 11 for them.
thank you for your reply

If your enough capacity to hold extra pond water in your containers, obtain the water from the pond weeks before you know that your koi will spawn (my fish's mating season begins every September).

During the weeks or months before the spawn, you should also have a bunch of sponge filters running in the pond where the parents are so you can instantly obtain a precycled sponge filter for use in each of the fry tanks.

I'd also recommend some plants inside the fry tanks such as elodea and anacharis. My fry have these in their tank and when they were young they would nibble upon the plants. Research told me that microscopic animals are often found on the plants and make additional treats for the fries.

Some keepers will also recommend using zeolite in the fry tanks to keep ammonia until control, but I have not used that method personally.

Regards,

Thanks koiguyoz for the info.. I have never had so many females spawn at once..lol Learn by trial and error..the past two years, I only had one female to spawn.....I "did" however save at least 100 fry's..they were born May 22nd....
thanks again..and will follow your advice next year..will update on my frys on the koi appreciation section..
