New to Koi and New to Forums (II) Can't Post

Good Day,

I never keep any koi before...my ldad beloved fishes were 'leekoh's....I dont think they are related to koi. I used to do aquarium things since I was 8 years old and I am about to have a koi container in one week time...after my new home fully renovated.

Actually it is not a pond, it is a blue fiber-made container. After looking at a local pet shop, I thot of have 30 'butterfly' koi in the container. I later learn they are namely 'Kohaku' after reading some materials at Kinokuniya.

Questions:-
a) Is it occay to have koi in such number at the same container/time?
b) What are do and don't things for koi container preparation?
c) Can koi survive in sudden black-out..and for how long.
d) Can we feed mix-vege or slice spinach to koi and how about live shrimp and small fishes?

Again, I am sorry if my questions insult some experience people here but my questions will be grow more mature along with the progress.

Sorry for my broken English.

Questions:-

a) Is it occay to have koi in such number at the same container/time?

First, what is the size of the container?

In any case 30 koi is too much for the container you propose to have them in. You will face high levels of nitrite and ammonia and are more than likely going to kill them in a short period of time. Remember all koi have the potential to reach 45 to over 90cms in size in a short period of time (say 5-10 years, some koi can reach 45cm in 3 years or less).

b) What are do and don't things for koi container preparation?
Do make sure it is cleaned out for any chemicals.
Do make sure there are no leaks.
Do use a large biological filter.

c) Can koi survive in sudden black-out..and for how long.
Keeping the tank well aerated is important in allowing the koi to survive a blackout. If you have a large number of koi there is a lower chance of surviving during a prelonged black out (say past 6-12 hours) as the ammonia and nitrite rise and the oxygen levels drop.

Purchasing a portable power generator is a good idea if you know you will be getting blackouts in the future.

d) Can we feed mix-vege or slice spinach to koi and how about live shrimp and small fishes?

Ensure the veges are chemical free, because if they have been previously sprayed with insecticide you might poison your fish. You can feed dead shrimp. Many owners here don't feed live animals to koi.

Thanks Bro!,

I will keep that in mind and will publish my new koi container picture, tentatively next week.

From there I would like to write down what I had done to make things run well (or not!)

Again, sorry for my broken English.
