Problem with green water and high ph Can't Post

I am a new user and have no idea how this works. I have a 9,000 gallon pond that has green water and a ph level of 9. Salt, nitrites, ammonia all test good. I have put in PH buffer, but to no avail. I can only see the fish when they come up to eat. I have large Koi and they seem to be fine. I don't know what to do. I really want clear water. I have sun half day, shade the other half. The pond was new last summer - didn't treat or take care of it. Drained and cleaned it about two months ago. Looked beautiful for awhile. I just two weeks ago put my Koi in the pond. I brought them from my other pond. They appear to be very happy. Can anyone help me? Frown

Drained and cleaned two months ago:
If you have completely cleaned every inch of the pond (and the biological filter as well) you've just put your pond back into the new pond syndrome and you might be coming out of it soon.

However, since the job of the biological filter is to remove the waste nutrients in the water through the use of nitrobacter that live on the media inside your biological filter, you must have enough media to treat the wastes in your pond (and when there is enough, you will achieve clear water).

In addition, you must never was the biological media with water from the tap (that normally contains chlorine used to treat the water for human consumption, but instead use water from the pond when cleaning the biological media from time to time - which in most cases is rarely).

Can you please elaborate on the biological filter you are using with the pond? (Model, size, description...the more the better).

I have to confess that I am not sure what a biological filter is. I have filters in the back of the skimmers that get cleaned, but we have a well with no chlorine. It has good PH and no ammonia. I tested the ph of the tap water yesterday and had 6.5. My pond is 9. I'm not sure where to go next. Do I keep putting in the maintenance doses of microblift and algeaway?

pvonbarg....

I personally don't like using commercial chemicals to control pH and algea....

Aside from a bio filter, you should have a UV light, it kills the floating algea and clumps them up to be filterd away in the filter....

buffers such as oyster shells maintain the pH at a desirable level and keep it stable....if your tap water is pH 6.5, it is not high....it's slightly low....I suggest add maybe 1/2 cup of baking soda to the water....remember to dissolve the baking soda in a bucket first before applying to pond water.Smile then check pH again....if still not high enough, add some more till the pH is about 7.Tongue

Re: [s_clan] Problem with green water and high ph [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jarvis, thanks for answering me. I have UV lights. My tap water that I use to fill the pond is PH 6.5, but my pond is PH 9. The water is very green and cloudy/murky. I have no string algae and no algea on the rocks in the pond, but I can't see the fish unless they are at the top. I have 5 beautiful Koi, but no nothing about them. Two are about 22 inches long and orange and white, two are about 18 inches and orange and white and the baby is black and about maybe 14 inches. They seem to be quite happy in the water but I really, really would like to get it clearer. What do you think about the color of the water?

pvonbarg....

If the UV lamps are running you should see gradual reduction of the greenalgea floating around...the lamps are usually funtional for at most a year or two....if they're too old, replace them....

If the filter is effective at filtering out the algea, you pond should be able to clear up in less than a couple of days....

either one is not working efficiently....change the lamp or wash the filter....

As for the pH....I suggest the safest way is gradual water changes....a little bt every other day to slowly drcrese the pH...Tongue

Koi live perfectly in green water, so don't worry too heavily about their health in green water...
