Salt after heavy shower

Hi,
My pond is only partial sheltered. This afternoon, there was a heavy downpour and as a result, a lot of rain water went into the pond. I was advised by some koi friends to put salt into the pond after a heavy downpour. Is this the 'correct' practise? and if so, what's the rational behind this?
