Swimming in koi pond Can't Post

couple of weeks ago i had to dive into my koi pond to remove a stone that got lodged in one of the pipes extracting water. good fun!! then i was warned that i'm exposing myself to disease and parasites jumping into the pond.

appreciate advise on any disease/ parasite risks from doing so...and how best to minimise the risk (coz i did enjoy jumping in and want to do so again!)

Hello, look at it this way, Koi live in lakes, people swim in these, so apart from all the trash that people dump into lakes, all the oil residues from boats and such, your pond is probabily cleaner than most lakes, so I would say you should have no problem, and in fact it is prbabily you that may introduce something to your pond. but I have also spent many times waist deep in my ponds and I have had no problems, plus breeders have to get into their mud ponds to catch their koi! So enjoy!

Dude, you need to get to hospital right away. A friend of mine got seriously ill after swimming in his Koi pond and died a few weeks later. A Koi burst out of his chest on the operating table, then took off into the hospital. Like in the Alien movie. Dude, you are very ill.

I have done so many times and so far no probs. But I always take the precaution of wearing goggles and earplugs.Better to be safe than sorry. If your pond and filters has been regularly cleaned, you should be ok. Just be careful not to injure yourself. We must not underestimate potential dangers. I dont mean to be a scaremonger; A tragedy happened to the father of a hobbyist in the UK. He cut himself while cleaning the filters and died from infections shortly after. He was probably weak and his antibodies sould not kill the infection. In one documentary on Discovery Channel, it was mentioned that people have died from bacterial infections in the Florida Everglades.

Hello, I would like to mention that safty is important in the sence that when we have to get into our ponds, we are generaly alone trying to do something and that is when a simple SLIP can result in hitting our heads and drowning, in most cases when people get into water ( pools, lakes the beach) there are generaly many people around that can help us, and this is not the case in koi ponds . We generaly dont have all the friends and family around to watch us do something that may take just a minute to do,like taking a stone out of the drain, as far as infections go, I too would recommend that one protect their eyes and ears and take a shower afterwards. And as far as any injury ( cuts ect) these should be cleaned! I once had a family visit my ponds in my yard, and while we were talking next to a pond, their 3 year old fell in!!! he was fine, but this is an example of the many dangers that can exist!

thanks for the tips guys!

i was rather irresponsible the time i jumped in as no-one else was home. after stern warning from my better half i'd better wise up to be overconfident that i'd not get in trouble. esp with a pond that's 5 feet deep!
