bleeding from gills Can't Post

MadPirate Today after completing my new pond I was moving my fish back into there new beautiful home, everyone looks healthy, but during the transfer I netted one of my big guys and he started to bleed from his gills it stopped right away but I put right back in my holding tank added melafix and left him another fish. I called my fish guy he said that in transfer sometimes they get stressed and do this, he also said he would be fine. Has anyone else had this experience or heard of this. It was very scary.

Re: [tomdot] bleeding from gills [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi tomdot,

No worries Smile. This is quite common when handling big koi. Btw, did you lift the big fella out of the water with the net or using a koi sock? It's not reccomended lifting koi, especially big ones with the net. A koi sock or a big plastic bag reduce the risk of injuries during transfer as it prevents the koi from struggling too much.

There's no need for medication. You can safely transfer the big fella into its new home.

Dennis,

Thank you for your reply, early this morning I transferred him back into the big pond. He seemed to handle the transition better. And looks great this evening. But I think you are right about getting a sock, I think he weighs at least 10 pounds now even though my net is big I think the bigger ones are uncomfortable.
