To find out more try www.koivet.com . I have encountered fin rot before on one of my koi. Firstly, you must find yourself a tank separate from the one your butterfly koi is in. Ideally you will use this tank to take the koi into for diagnosis and treatment. We often call this tank the quarantine tank (QT). If you don't have a QT, you should consider one for the future. I treated my koi's fin rot with melafix. Melafix is made from tea tree oil and assisted my koi to rebuild it's fins within two weeks. So basically, the treatment helps the koi to rebuild its fins. I would take a look at your koi and see if there is anything else on it's body besides the fin rot. Because the fin rot is caused by a bacterial infection, we must make sure it also doesn't have any other symptoms like cotton wool fungus (saprolegenia) which can be treated with a malachite green/methylene blue/formalin pre-mix (which is often called "anti-fungal" treatments) . After checking for any other symptoms, you should treat the butterfly koi with melafix in a QT (that should ideally be fitted with a biological filter of some kind (that shouldn't have activated carbon which would remove the medical treatment in the water). Make sure the QT has a tight fitting locked lid (but make sure there are some holes to allow old air to degas). Consider in the future, purchasing a test kit to test for nitrite, ammonia and PH levels in the pond water. These can be purchased from the local fish shop. The test is important to ensure the health of the fish in the long term in the pond.
