Help Please Can't Post

Otter attack - awful. Had not lost a koi to a predator since I built my new pool 7 years ago (7 feet deep with steep sides)...until last week.

The otter ripped up every single koi. The only koi remaining was the badly damaged "Queen," a beautiful 24" Tancho. The otter bit off her entire tail, ripped out her left fin and most of her right. It is so sad. We are going to give her a chance and do what we can...but I have my doubts.

Anyway, I am installing a substantial electric fence. Just wondering if anyone needs to downsize the number of their quality Koi. If you live in Washington or Oregon let me know, I'll pick them up. My kids are still in shock - I am too! They'll have a good home: the pool is 3400 gallons with a 800 gallon filter, UV filter, twin pumps, fountain, skimmer and main drain. (Toddwulf@comcast.net.)

Thanks!

Sorry to hear of this tragedy! I feel that it is OK to protect your koi, and if that means going hunting for this predator, then go for it! He has learned where a new food source is, so he will come back, and probabily bring some friends!

Re: [Wulf] Help Please [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,

We are encountering the same problem at the moment. A couple of days ago our neighbor lost all of his fish to an otter. After he had finished his pond, he continued his work at our pond. We are left with only a few fish (8 out of 30) and are desperate to find a way to kill him, or otherwise get rid of him. We were wondering if you had found a way to deal with it and would appreciate ANY kind of suggestion as to what to do. Please, if there is anything or anyone you know to help us with our problem, contact us.
We are sorry for your loss, and absolutely understand what you went through.

Thank you,
