pond design Can't Post

Hi, Dear All,

i just joined this Forum. i have never reared any fish before and now i intend to build a small pond in the garden, size 9' x 7' x 1.5' to 2' (depth) to rear koi fish.
can anyone assist me with the following:

1. a design plan (with drawing) on the pump, filter and piping arrangment
2. type of pump and filter to use
3. is the size of the pond too big for a beginner?
4. since this is my first time, i would like to cut down on the cost.

Thank you & regards,

Re: [sitcom] pond design [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi sitcom, you need to post this question in the pond construction or pond design area. Forgot where to post this, but look in the main forum.

We made our own filter system, which has worked fine for many many years. We have a huge waterfall pump that pumps the water into two filter systems. One at the top of a spillway, with filter material in that holding area. The other filter is an older water barrel, wooden that is lined with left over liner. We have an old antique handpump which the water pours out off. We didn't want the water to touch any metal in this handpump, we we piped up pvc through this pump. It goes into this tub and out through a frog or spitter I guess they call them. Gives extra filtering and air.
Also we use some of that crushed shell in this wooden barrel. You can use that for other things that you want to get into the water, dispersed in the water, rather than throwing directly into the pond. We have our submersible pump in a milk crate with plastic mesh around it. Works great, and doesn't get all gummed up with all that garbage in the bottom of the pond. Oh between the spillway and the pond we have a bog. The water flows into the bog, then into the pond. I was told this was a great way to filter the whole pond, as the bog is natures way of filtration. Don't seem to have a problem with this system. Last year when we cleaned out the filters, we did develop a problem. But everything is fine now. Hope this helps. Lynda
