Once the action had slowed considerablyWink we removed some of the egg laden plants to a small pool at the head of our stream to hatch... and hatch they didSly
Here are some pix as they have progressed along.

Moving Day... [In reply to] Can't Post

Things were getting a bit crowded and I was just about ready to build them a new home for growing out when we discovered something... A bull snake had set up housekeeping in the Fry pond Frown and he was munching sushiMad The snake lost his head, but not before thinning things out quite a bit, including a few promising Kohaku Fry I had been keeping an eye onUnsure
Needless to say, moving them became a hurry up ordeal that took several hours of fast framing of a sturdy fry tank with a screened cover.
We bowled them and took a few pictures to get an accurate idea of their growth rates. You will notice 2 things that seem out of place. There is the obvious xxxlarge Tobi, who was just over 3" long at only 30 days old (there always has to be at least one). Additionally there are some tiny little buggers only the size of a fingernail sliver. Believe it or not they were all hatched at the same time. I failed to mention earlier that while the adults were playing slap and tickle on one side of the pond, some of the Juveniles got all worked up from the hormones in the water and decided to fool around in the backseat while their parents weren't lookingShocked. Parent size dictates egg size which dictate fry size at birth. The Juvenile delinquent females were all <10" long, but sexually mature nonetheless so we wound up with some tiny fry that were nearly 3 weeks old before we even saw them...
Here they are on 6/17/07 at 30 days old. The coin in the bottom of the bowl is 1" diameter for a size reference.

There were a total of 92 fry counted as we moved them to their new and more secure home.
2 days later the same female spawned AGAINCrazy Evidently she got tired or the water just got so loaded with pheromones that she quit before all her eggs were laid. Conditions were right once again so she and the boys finished her work for the year and the original hatchery pool is full of tiny fry once againTongue

Hey Mookey, Looks like this must be a good year for Aka Bekko FemalesWink I looked at your slide show and baby pix, but we both know details on fry don't come through well in pictures. What are they looking like? We were hoping for Sanke offspring but only got a few. Mostly bekko, Kohaku, and lots of junk.

Re: [larz1] Hanky Panky in the pond... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Larz1,
Actually I lost a whole lot of babies in the beginning..there had been so much activity going on in a two day span...I had three females spawn in the same pond..the water was fouled and unfortunaley I lost three containers of frys...below are the majority of the frys that made it, come from these koi..
Their color is changing (baby fry)..they aren't really a gold gold, more like a dark tan/deep gold w/black markings...but here are the mother and fathers of the majority of the babies that are doing really well..these spawned so quick I never got a chance to get my camera that morning on May 22nd...Will be taking photo's all along the way..can't wait to see how they look in a couple of months.......
http://s79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/Mookey007/Pond%20Album/?action=view&current=MotherKoi07.jpg I believe the mother is a ogon and the fathers are bekko and don't know what the other one is..if you do, let me know..lol
I'm not into show fish..I just love to have them and raise the babies.. Smile

The two fathers appear to be Shiro Bekko and Aka Bekko, while the mother looks like a doitsu, probably Beni Kikokuryu, but the picture isn't really clear enough to be certain. Take a look around at this website to see what looks closest to yours in person.

Hi Larz1,
Thanks for the link..I have a hard time doing the indentification. ..the mother has the net pattern. I will try and get a good shot of her..I will have to catch her and put her in my blue tub for photo's.
She is a very pretty koi..unusual looking to me, and the babies are changing colors all the time..I'm going to have some really pretty babies with nice markings. Smile

Hi Jarvis,
Each time ours have spawned it has started first thing in the morning and how long it goes on depends on how big the girl is and how many boys there are to chase her...Wink One thing is certain. When they start up, it won't take you long to figure out what they're up toShockedSly

So by "First thing in the morning", you mean like at sunrise? or like what time specifically?

Last year I woke up to the action on the morning feed...it was around 8:00am...Smile

From our experiences when they "self start" it seems to be well underway by the time the sun comes up. Water temperatures, barometric pressures, etc... all seem to play into the trigger mechanisms that get them going, and just before sunrise is generally the lowest temperature point of the day.

Well, They're almost 8 weeks old now, so I thought I'd post a few update shots of their size and changes in coloring. Photo's aren't the greatest, but at least you can get a bit of an idea.
For the sake of size reference, the feeding dish is 4 3/4" in diameter.
As you can tell, most of them are 2" or larger now, with the biggest about 4 1/2-5".
There are several Kohaku I'm interested in, but most of the Sanke look iffy at best. Several have nice ginrin going but only time will tell.

In the 2nd photo you may notice a pair of Dark fry at the 9:00 position. If you look closely you can see they have blueish bands of color and Olive Green bands. I'm watching these closely to see if this coloration holds up as that would make for an interesting Ochiba specimen. There are 4 or 5 like this, and a few are longfins.

Looks like Olive green Chagoi to me. Fairly common to get a few in almost any spawning, even from pure Kohaku pairs there are always some throwbacks to the Magoi roots of Koi.

Posting pix from Photobucket is easy.
You just copy the last link option before the picture (IMG Code) into the body of your post. It will post the picture directly rather than just give a link to your photobucket picture.
Here's your picture you linked to.

Here's a video of mine, shot the same day.
Turn the volume off. The radio was blaring a talk show in the background when I shot the video and I don't know how to edit it out with my softwareBlush
I guess the forum doesn't support the video Flash player... it won't post up.

Re: [Mookey] Hanky Panky in the pond... [In reply to] Can't Post

I started them with just fine ground high protein powder and extra spirulina when they were little. Now that they are bigger I've got them on a concoction of my own design.
1/2 lb whole shrimp, boiled in garlic water.
1 lb high protein pellets with high spirulina content.
As many of those crummy little snails as I can catch before the have a chance to plug up my filtration.

When the shrimp is cooked, dump the pellets into the pot along with the snails and let soak until the pellets go soft.
pulverize the whole mess in a food processor or blender until it is a thick, wet, gooey mess.
Spread on cookie sheets about 1/4" thick and freeze.
Break up into frozen chunks and put in baggies, and right back to the freezer.

Take out as much as you need several times a day and watch 'em go wildCool They don't even wait for it to thaw before attacking itWink

Time for an update. Many have been culled already and some of these will be, but these pix give a look at the progress they've made thus far. Give me your honest opinions of them, good, bad, or indifferent.
