Momotaro Sanke Tosai Can't Post

Hi all,

With the few threads on Momo Sanke discussion, I would like post my own Momotaro sanke for discussion here.
I bought this Sanke end Mar 07 at 36 cm.

First pic was taken when I made the purchase, looks skinny.
2nd pic is about 1 month later, when I bring it back to my pond.

Pls let me have your most frank comments/condemn. Smile

Re: [koinutx] Momotaro Sanke Tosai [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello koinutx,

During Daisuke Maeda's seminar held at Kepongkoi recently, he mentioned that for Momotaro koi, one should select a koi with long and smooth body shape. Apparently, high backbone body structure according to him is not critical when selecting Momotaro koi. Koi which has this traits will grow in length first from tosai to 3 years old. The body volume and girth on the koi will only start to bulk up in 3 to 5 years.

They feed their tosai koi 5 times per day because tosai koi are more active and energetic and so the food taken in are more easily digested. On the other hand, koi over 70cm in sizes are fed only 2 times per day because koi of this size will swim slower and also less energetic and hence it will take a much more longer period for the food digestion.

Sorry to add this information in because I think the beauty of this koi will depends greatly on your skill in raising the koi to maintain the high quality of the Shiroji, Beni and Sumi. The pattern itself is not superior, but the skin quality is very good and the pure white Shiroji is the most important feature in this koi when mature, IMHO.

Demerit Points:-
1) The Beni on the head and extending covering over the gill plate is undesirable and it makes the appearance lack dignity.
2) The Sumi patterns are a bit chaotic now but then again in this varieties the Sumi can change quite dramatically when the koi is still young and developing.
3) In Sanke, the ideal Odome ( tail tube ) should have clear Shiroji on the tail end section and finishing with Beni as the last colour to counter balance the Beni colour on the head which then gives it the overall balance patterns distribution on the body.

Looking at the skin and colours quality of this koi, I think you must have a very good pond system set-up to maintain the high quality of this koi. Please share with us the secrets for your successful pond system set-up. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Re: [thiamhwa] Momotaro Sanke Tosai [In reply to] Can't Post

Thiam Hwa,

Thanks for your posting.

This is my first try on Momo fish (followed by the Kohaku that I posted in Mohan's thread, and a 3rd Showa). All of them are from Vincent.Wink I'm trying to get other Momo fish from a S'pore dealer as a comparison.

I'm very attracted to Momo fish, mainly due to the way the fish develop thru the different stage of life cycle.

I'm currently feeding 4-5 times a day, looking at the appetite of the fish, starting 2 weeks ago after mohan mentioned to me on the feeding recommendation by Daisuke Maeda. I was feed 3 times a day previously. A point to add is that I'm using small pellets for the last 2 feeds (hoping that this will help them in digesting the food.)

I agreed that the pattern of this koi will get 'weaker' as the fish grow in size.
The beni patch is not large enough, and the sumi, esp the one on the shoulder, will probably consolidate into 1 large solid patch and made the fish very heavy on sumi.

But on the other hand, I'm looking forward to a fish with sumi and hi patches of similar size at alternate placing. Not a traditional way of pattern appreciation, but it will all depend on whether the eventual overall effect is nice.

And I like the skin of this fish with very white shiroji. And the body, I think it give me a soft look, can't really descript it.Wink

On my pond setup.....it's a small onePirate water level at 4mx2mx0.9m height, < 8ton.
I'm running a bekki shower with 80kg of bateria house. 3 small filter chamber (15%), 1st one empty, 2nd one filter mat with many air stones, third one for pump and UV light.
Daily flushing, and fortnightly clean and dry up the 1st chamber.

2 Hiblow 80 air pump with 5m air hose running at the side of the pond. and filter chamber.

I'm adding the 'Momo magic mud powder' (dunno what is the actual name) weekly into the pond.
Smile

I do not have the facility to grow the fish to jumbo. They will have to transfer to Koi hotel once they reach nisai/sansai, depending on the quality of fish.Smile

Hi koinutz,

What I am going to comment on is what koi keepers heard many many times.

Body confirmation.

As it is, it is slim but since Momo bloodline should put bulk.

Pattern

Good yondon pattern. The first Hi is bigger and gets smaller towards the tail.

Kato sumi

The Sanke will catch the eye of anyone and everyone because of the eye - catching kato sumi.

Shiroji

Imposing sanke because of snow white unblemished snow white skin

Sex

Looks like a male – if female, it will be a good koi to keep.

Drawback

Sumi a bit messy - No offence please!

Keep us posted about its development.

Good luck.

Hi koinutx,

I have seem your posting of the Momotaro Eagle bloodline koi as well in Mohan's thread. It is a very nice
Keeper's koi and certainly for one to learn and follow in the development process of a koi.

Thanks for the descriptions of your pond system set-up. I can now understand how you had managed to
maintained the skin quality and colours of the koi. The only set-back is the 8 tons and 3'0" depth pond
size which will probably limit the growth of the koi. Having said that, there was a Thai hobbyist who had
managed to do just that in his 8 tons pond. If I am not mistaken, I think the thread was posted by Tao BKK
either 1 or 2 years ago entitled " Jumbo koi in 8 ton pond ". My advise is not to over crowd your pond and
hopefully one day you may achieve your dream Jumbo koi.

By the way, the Momotaro powder which you are refering to is call ' Onitaiji ' powder which is a water
improvement product to enhance the koi's appetite as well as the beautiful sheen skin on the koi.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Mohan,

Thanks for the coments.
The fish is confirmed as female by Vincent. You are not the only guy that said she looks like a male. Anyway, I personally think is too early to conclude, will probably check the sex a few months down the road.

Yes, the sumi is still messy and I'm hoping that it will consolidate, and Momo fish do have a track record of consolidation.

Hopefully, the fish can turn out this way (modify photo.) btw, this fish (36cm) came in as 2nd in the 40bu at the recent S'pore Koi show.

Thiam Hwa,

hmmm... "nice Keeper's koi" is there a hidden meaning behind this phase?Wink Currently, it is also confirmed as a female, but rated as Mid Size fish.

Yes, I know the limitation in my pond, that's why have to try very hard to limit the no of fish in my pond. There are currently 10 fish inside, ranging from 25-40cm. Still trying hard to let go the rest, but the 'resale' market in S'pore is not good!Frown Most people want to buy my fish at Garden grade price, S$50-100.Crazy
