My collection after 9 months Can't Post

Hi all

I started with this hobby about 9 months ago (around March 2007).

I bought 5 local KOIs in March 2007 from 1 of the fish shop near to my mother's house. Took back (2 hours journey) and put them in the aquarium.

There were around 8-10cm when I bought them.

After reading more from the forum here and got guides and help from everyone especially Thiam Hwa and Roger89 I bought a used FB tank (7 ft). Now together with 4ft filter box.

For the 1st month I'm feeding them with normal koi food bought from the shop during the purchase. Later on I started with yamato mixed with spirulina. Can see good progress after that.

I don't have picture except a video here taken in March

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8bBCL95sKk

Around August I bought 4 more (shiro utsuri, sushui, ogon and chagoi) - I may put the wrong name there but check out the pictures. The chagoi was the largest now even though it was only around 12cm 4-5 months back.

After about 9 months I took some pictures again below. As you know local KOI will not hold the color nice but overall I'm happy with it coz they have grown so much Smile Some of them still have scale not fully out yet.

Would love to hear feedbacks if any.

Re: [norazli] My collection after 9 months [In reply to] Can't Post

nice, nice fish Nozali, your fiberglass tank remind me of 20 years ago, that what i first started, a 500 gallon tank with lot of pond rated koi. guess what now? four 2000 gallon concrete tank . Looking back, if i have to do all over again, i should have only one 4000 gallon pond with only few top rate fish. my selection of fish goes over time, from $10 to $50 now i can only satisfied with at least $200, $300 fish. If i do that from the begining, i should save a lot of $ then. well, i'm not too smart in predicting myself anyway !!!

Hi Samantha.

Thanks. 20 years ago???? wow......

My next plan is to get portable pool next year if plan to build still on hold when the new house is ready (need to settle down 1st with new house)

For portable pool I will go minimum for the 15X7X3ft. Need to measure again my land area when house is ready.

I agree with you on the purchase though. Should have gone straight with good quality. Not only saving $$$$ but also time and food SmileSmileSmile.

I've told myself to only buy good quality KOIs after this even though it is only 1. But have to control myself coz even now it is already over stock.hehehe

Hey Azli,

Good to see that you're happy in this hobby. I think you're the among the few ppl who are happy despite keeping local and average quality koi Wink. Keep up the appreciation.

I'm not sure if it is the picture or what, but I can see the gloss on the body of your two kois, the kohaku and tancho. Nice!

I hope you may consider building a concrete pond one day when you have the good plan for it. Then your kois can really grow and you can upgrade to better quality koi with a bigger pond.

Happy new year!

Hi Roger. Thanks. In fact you putting more "posison" last time with the free adoption SmileSmile Yup, remember I'm also thinking about giving away the local kohaku? May be not lah. Even though they r local and average quality I think I'm attached to them. Sad to see it go unless really-really no space.

The tancho has a very nice red. Glossy a bit. Among all the kohaku, the smallest (koi_1.jpg) has the deepest HI. But the head color not so nice I think. More like a Nidan. Next purchase I will try to get Sandan or YondanSmile

Yeah......that is the plan. No rush. After new house settle I will work on that. It's going to be a limited size but I will try my best. When the time come I will post the plan here to get feedback from everyone. Then can get more and better koi.

Congrats on your pond. What is the measurement of the pond? I'm still in FB tank. I visited X/Ling the other day but didn't buy anything.

Breeding as well? Perhaps you can concentrate on rearing them first coz breeding i think is another adventure Smile

There is 1 more at Jalan Klang Lama. Turn in at the caltex. The place name is Arowana-Aquarium. I also went to Kohaku at Taman Tun. Just next to the caltex there. Opposite Volvo Service center. Have you visited Sentul KOI Park? Junction is opposite the HSBC in Jalan Ipoh. Once you turn in at the guard house just follow the signboard to KOI Center.

b) When is the best season/month to purchase Japanese new born koi ?

No idea brother. But normally if you want to have more option you have to go when the new shipment arrived from Japan. Best is to check with the shop when is the new shipment. Old stock may have less option/quality but normally at a discounted price.

Not sure though but so far Imported Japs KOIs are more expensive than that. Unless they have sales for clearance. Hope this helps.

Nice pond, but sorry to say that with the pond size and depth, it is more for Goldfish. Don't rear Koi, they would grow big and end up big belly.Angelic

But honestly, you have a nice fish pondSly

Thank for sensei advises. Little bit sad Unsure, but may be start with 1 pair of Original-Original Japan born KOHAKU first,
Learn the Koi breeding technique and DREAM for a bigger pond.

a) Aim for existing house garden/yard.
b) Existing house car park.....or...
c) Use FB tank like Norazli senpai.......or
d) Take me home, to the place... I belongs.........Balik Kampung.

" Every thing must start with FIRST step...... "
I will GAMBARIMASU.

For Koi Breeding you need SPACE!!! LOTS of space.
We do a little breeding just for fun. Even with a much larger pond than yours and a separate hatchery tank we can only raise a few hundred before culling down to a few dozen to keep from overcrowding them. I would suggest that you concentrate on keeping your Koi well instead until you are able to have a much, MUCH bigger dream pond... or two... or threeWinkWinkWink

Kimio

My next upgrade would be portable pool. For the price of FB tank I can get bigger portable pool.

This is the next plan before I can build the pond.

At the moment I only have 2 japs koi, rest are local. But it is a good learning experience though.

Last weekend I upgraded their food even though some said why waste for local kois.
