My koi changed colour Can't Post

I bought this 3" koi a little while ago. It was quite dark in colour. I put it in a temp DIY clay pond for a few weeks while I dug my pond, during which time it underwent a big colour change. Then, once transferred to the big pond, its colour has gone dark again! What can cause this?

Hi Kortana,

koi often change their colour when they are stressed. It indicates that the new water condiition in clay pond causes stress.Try to improve your water quality.hope it can enlighten u.thx
Best regards,

i wouldn't worry about it to much its a natural thing for fish to get darker or lighter depending on the back ground e.g Atlantic cod on the beach will be a sandy color a few feet away you could find a red cod that has been living in the kelp and rocks .

regards

Carp are primitive beasties so they respond to changes in environment by trying to blend in. Some Koi (like Chagoi) are highly adaptable, going from deep chocolate brown to pale tea color depending on their environment.
The comment on stress as a cause it right on, but stress to a Koi doesn't always mean bad water. Predators, water, background color, all cause a form of stress Koi will react to. Many Koi Kichi who show Koi will move show prospects to a blue show tank for a few days to see how they react before taking to a show. If their colors fade and do not recover within 24 hrs, they don't show well.

Well he seems to be fine at the moment, I'm just wondering what he'll look like when he's fully grown.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. It is a very young Koi, so MUCH will change over the next few years... it always doesWink
It is always good to remember when discussing "stress" to Koi, that not all stress is the same. Physical stress cause by poor water conditions, poor quality feed, predation, etc... are of course cause for concern. Other forms of stress are merely "perceived" stress (perceived by the Koi that is), such as a change in environment like going from a light colored pond to a dark one, or from healthy liner pond water to healthy mud pond water. They perceive the change in surroundings, and adapt to it according to nature.
