Orangy Hi for Sanke Acceptable? Can't Post

Hi,

Can someone tell me if it is acceptable to have orangy Hi for Kokaku or Sanke?

I have a Sanke (65cm) that has thick orange hi instead of bright red. I spoke to JK Koi before and they told me that this is acceptable even at a competition. The important thing is that the hi has to be thick and it is not necessary to have bright red. Below are the pictures of my Sanke.

Any comment on this?

Any way to improve the redness of the Hi?

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi Patrick

I am no expert regarding this matter especially whether they are acceptable or not for koi competitions. Perhaps Sifu Eric Lim can enlighten us on this?

I too have 2 kohakus around 45-50cm bought during the early days of my koi hobby which were locally spawned kois of Jap parentage. Somehow, the sumi is orange rather than red. I was told that with good quality food the orange would turn red. But it has been over 1 1/2 yrs now and they remain orange. Some say, koi food rich in beta carotene would greatly increase the redness of the sumi. I believe DR Tan uses colour enhancer pellets for his kois. Perhaps he can shed some light as to its effectiveness?

I have no problems with their appearances because they were handpicked by me and I loved them for who they are. You are right, thick sumi is important as it makes them look grand and imposing. Just my opinion.

Johnson

PS. The sanke looks very nice!Smile

Hi Patrick,

I too like Johnson do not know much about the competitions, however if you don;t like the orange on that sanke you are more than welcome to give her to me, she's a beauty Sly.

Stuart and Johnson,

Those are very encouraging words. Thanks. SmileSmileSmileSmile

I will try to feed more color enhancing food but not sure if it will help.

One more question I have is that, I've noticed that if the koi gets bigger, it tends to move slower. This is what's happening to my new Sanke. It is 65cm, and when I put it together with my other koi that range from 15cm to 40cm, the smaller koi tend to get to the food first. In the end, the Sanke never get a chance to eat, and every time I have to throw a lot of food, and the sanke only get 1 or 2 pellets. Any one has similar problem? Any suggestion or solution?

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi guys Smile, most experienced koi-keepers would agree that thick Hi is more important than colour intensity as the latter can be enhanced by colour enhancer prior to competitions.

Patrick Smile, I've not encountered the problem of larger koi losing out to smaller koi during feeding. No doubt larger koi seems slower and more relaxed than smaller ones, when they surface, more food pellets gets drawn to their mouth. So they don't really lose out at all. However if the larger koi is not well adjusted to the environment or you're not throwing enough pellets or the pellets are not evenly distributed, it will of of course lose out. Wink

Dr Tan,

Thanks for the info. Does it mean that a lot of the competition koi will look orangy during normal days until 1-2 months before the competition when they are fed with colour enhancer? What kind of colour enhancer do you recommend?

I think the Sanke might still be adjusting to the new environment. For my other kois, they have no fear at all and come up and snap the food in front of the Sanke. It has been two weeks now and the Sanke is eating 1 pellet a day. Is this going to be a problem?

Thanks,

Patrick

Patrick, I do not know if most competition koi will look less red during non-competition days but I would not be surprised if they do. I'm not a specialist in colour enhancers, but I guess Spirulina is a good choice. Strange that your new Sanke is still taking in so few pellets after 2 weeks in the new pond. No external sign of illness? colour fading? losing weight? Assuming all water parameters are normal, you may have to do a closer examination of the koi. Check the ventral or underside for ulcers or sores. Feel the abdomen to see if there are any areas of abnormal softening which may indicate sepsis. If I'm correct, HWong recently bought a Kohaku that had the same problem. Hopefully I'm wrong abt your Sanke! Smile

I believe the Persimon colour of red is prefered by the Japanese compared to the fire hydrant red especially in the larger koi. I think ur Sanke is perfect.... if you don't want, I want.Wink

I just notice something very interesting. When I look at the Sanke under the spot light at night, it turn out to be luminous orangy red color. Compare that to my bright red kohaku under the same condition, the bright red is becoming dark and unattractive color and luminous orangy color really stands out. Not sure if this is the extra bonus.
