PASTE FOOD FOR KOIS Can't Post

Hi All ,

Paste Food , though had been tried by many throughout the whole region here and japan , have come in many forms with various ingredients and staple food used as based , In Taiwan, we used fermented sweet potatoes as staple food for Kois . I would like to open up my recipe on the Paste Food I made for my Kois , from the basis recipe provided by Sakai Fish Farm with just a little improvement and proportion changes .

Ingredients
========

FD Wheatgerm - 10 kilos
Osyters - 12 kilos
Honey - 4 kilos
Silkworm - 400 grams
or Olive Oil - 300 grams - as replacement of silkworm ( Cheaper and easily available than Silkworm Pupae )
Fruit Sugar - 100 grams ( Glucose - for energy )

Expected Yield - abt. 27 kilos of Paste Food .

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Preparation Stage
============

1 ) FD Wheatgerm + Silkworm Pupae to be grinded into fine powder . Any food grinder can do the job .

2 ) Boil the fresh Oysters till they are cooked . No not over-cook the Oysters as they could dry up and shrink . Just boil to cook .
Upon cooked , blend the Oysters into Juice with the fruit juice blender .

3 ) Pour the Oyster Juice into a pail , when the Oyster Juice cool off
add in the Honey and Fruit Sugar into the pail of Oyster Juice and comingle them . Make sure the Honey melts totally in the Oyster Juice.

Caution : Do not pour in the Honey when the Oysters Juice is still hot , as the heat would kill all the elements needed in the Honey .

+++++++++++++

Production Stage
===========

Now you have a pail of Oysters Juice ( with Honey and Fruit Sugar ) + a pail of Wheatgerm Powder ( with Silkworm ) .

You have to find a Dough making machine , or mix the 2 main ingredients into dough manually . Believe most of our wives or mother-in-law understand or can make dough better than us . Let them handle this part .SlySlySly

When the Dough is complete , you have to turn this big dough into smaller dough of 500 grams each , stringwrap ( food-wrap) the smaller dough and store these doughs in the freezer . As there's no preservative used for this Paste Food , it has to be stored in a freezer ( I bought an ice-creamer freezer to store this .SlySlySly )

++++++++++++

Feeding Stage
=========

If you have intention to feed the 500 grams for the day , take it out of the freezer at least an hour prior that , as you have to let the dough thaw before serving . When the dough soften enough , it's SHOW TIME !!!SlySly

Do not throw the 500 grams into the pond in one go , unless your Kois have got mouth bigger than a shark .!! Peel it into smaller bits , slightly bigger than the size of our dry pallets . Use your fingers to compress or round it . You probably have to pre-prepare this part before going near your pond . The minute you realised they like the food , you probably would be fast enough to make the small bits for them . Bear in mind that Kois might looks big with big mouth , but in fact their gullets are small and they can only swallow foods in small bits the size of our dry pallets .

Happy Feeding ....SlySlySlySly

Honestly , I do not know how many of you guys would try this after all the fuss it takes to produce this ....

Cheers and happy dough making .SlySly

David

Thks for sharing your recipe. There was one stage in my goldfish rearing days when I was also very 'on' and prepared my own paste food as well. Basically blending various mixes of pellet food and other ingredients like honey, eggs, milk etc. I would mix small portions at a time and keep them in the fridge. I've since stopped as it is quite a bit of work, feeding pellet food is much more convenient but of course the paste food is a lot more nutritious

Abang David,

Thanks for sharing your secret recipe.

In fact, Kentaro San in the November 2005 Nichirin magazine describes about it but you have thrown more light on it.

Kentaro said “the fish are fed five times a day. Kentaro thinks that no other foods are better than hand-made paste food. Their hand-made paste food is made of mixture of Sakai dry food, oysters, pupae, soybean powders, honey, microorganism and medicine for liver. They spend about two hours to make the food, sometimes sampling the taste”.

At the SPKC forum Kentaro agreed that we can add garlic to the mixture.

In fact, I do my own paste food but I will try out yours. Thanks once again.

Re: [monscine] PASTE FOOD FOR KOIS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Handy,

I have been using my own paste food for some time but I am not confident of sharing it with you because I am still testing it. For instance, my first batch of Eagle Momo kois were entirely fed on my home made paste food and my second batch of Eagle kois were fed on commercial pallets. I found that the kois fed with paste food grew fast and put on volume but the ones now fed with pallets also grew fast but with slim bodies but more luster. This is not my final conclusion because the water parameters were not static during this stage. I also try to improve the water parameters constantly. Not to in the distant past, I posted that the water in my pond is what any koi keeper will love to have because I was confident then. I must confess that the water parameters have improved since then in spells and bound.

Once I am confident with my home made paste food I will definitely announce it to the whole world – about my recipe - at this stage it is not secret but on experiment.

Referring to Kintaro’s recipe can anyone explain what this liver medicine he is referring to is? I hope Guruji David Soon can help.

Hi Abang Mohan SmileSmile

Just to shed some light on " Liver Medicine " , I don't think it's wise to go into the technicalities of "liver medicine " as I believe what Kentaro said , were ingredients that promotes Healthy liver in our Kois .

Generally , Wheatgerm that we use as staple food for our Kois are healthy food that promotes healthy liver in our Kois as well . To supplement this , we add Soy bean , fermented or unfermented Soy bean ( Boiled or grinded into powder makes no difference ) . Garlic ( or garlic oil ) is another supplement for healthy liver . I tried with garlic oil , but seems the kois did not feed much with this ingredient added , so I remove that and add in olive oil to replace this . These few ingredients reduce fatty liver , which can be quite unhealthy for our Kois .

Soy Bean alone is good enough to supplement the wheatgerm in promoting healthy liver for our Kois . Liver medications only really needed if our fishes show sign of turning too yellow on the shiroji , meaning the Kois might have develope liver problem or that similar to "Jaundice - Skin turning orangey due too much beta carotene " that's also due to too much color food .

I have been assured by FD Koi Food that the wheatgerm they are using are of the high quality wheatgerm and ingredients that they have experimented for Hi-Growth covers ingredients meant for Healthy Liver in Kois . Healthy food bring out Healthy Kois .SlySlySly During this season , I only feed my kois with FD Food pallets ( from May - August )SlySly

To avoid complication to most general hobbyists , the basic ingredients are good enough to promote healthy Kois .

Hope above helps SlySlySly

Hi Abang Mohan , Smile

Apologies , I missed out on "micro-organism" issue Smile ... That's the "bacteria" which sakai Fish farm used for culturing their water .SlySly
Thought he would have explain microorganism . It's actually bacteria meant for the bio-filter , but they actually adds a little proportion of this into the paste food .

Hope the above clears the whole ingredient issues .SmileSmile

Re: [DavidSoon] PASTE FOOD FOR KOIS [In reply to] Can't Post

Have been feeding my kois paste food for the last week or so. They love it! Previously, they used to take a very leisurely attitude to the pellet food but now they are competing to get to the paste food. Using a slight variation to the recipe posted. Could not find oysters at NTUC so replaced with prawns instead which are boiled and then blended together with the shell. Read that the the head part contains a lot of protein. Also using a mixture of different pellet foods (FD, Silk 21 and Sakai).

David

Wanted to clarify about the FD wheatgerm. Was at Max and all I saw was either the growth food or the one for health (the one which is supposed to increase the mucus lining of the koi). Didn't see FD wheatgerm and when I asked, they weren't too sure either.

Hi Vincent !!WinkWink

Sorry for the late reply , as I was pretty tied-up last whole week .SlySly
FD Miracle - formulated for good body slime ( mucus ) , also double-up as medi-koi ( Medicine food for Koi ) .
FD Primo - formulated for fast growth .

FD Proto type Wheatgerm is the one that I used for my paste food . It's not as expensive as the above 2 types and it comes in 15 kilos packing , normally meant for farms . Mention FD Proto Type to Ah Seng or Charles at Max Koi farm , they should be able to assist you on this .SlySlySly

No reasons to be buying the above 2 ( Primo and Miracle ) for paste food , as the above 2 had been formulated for special reasons .. and they both work beautifully in their own way .

Believe it's hard to be getting oysters from May to August as these are the spawning months of Oysters , and not many people would consume Oyster during this season as well , thus my paste food feeding normally stops between mid May and restarts only in Mid September . Meantime , I fine tune my kois with the Primo and Miracles instead .SlySlySly

Hope this helps !!Laugh

Cheers
David

Hi Guruji David.
Sorry for the late reply.
Thanks for your input.
I am also interested as Vincent to know as to whether we can use prawns lnstead of oyster.
What is the difference in giving the prawns raw rather than having it boiled- I mean grinding it in a grinder
fresh without boiling.

Ahh ok. When I run out of my pellet food, I'll get the FD Proto. I think they were out of stock the last time.

Hi Abang Mohan / Vincent ,

Replacing oysters with prawn is certainly another brilliant choice of Vincent .SlySlySly
Like oysters , boiling them prior grinding is to ensure we get rid of the various bacteria found in these 2 foods , which might be deem unsuitable for our Kois .
Prawn head and the calcified shells of the prawns certainly adds calcium to the paste food . SlySlySly

Good choice Vincent , but believe cooked prawns does not produce as much liquid we need to make the dough , as the boiled oyster still would be more juicy than prawns .You can add in soy milk to replace the liquid difference . Just a suggestion .SmileSmile Soy is good for Koi liver as well .

Cheers

Re: [DavidSoon] PASTE FOOD FOR KOIS [In reply to] Can't Post

What I do is to pour the water that was used to boil the prawns into the blender and blend it together with the prawns since the water contains some of the nutrients as well. This is enough for me to mix with the powder. Not had to top up any liquid so far but if I need to, thks for the tip on soy milk. Was considering orange juice actually Cool

From my research on the net, some are also recommending adding squid and some fish e.g. salmon. Might try that the next round.

Uncle Soon,

Ever think or try to add pearl dust to the ingredients?? It's been said by the old chinese here that this powder would make baby skin smoother and shining luster yet white as pearl. They're taken when 6-8 of human pregnancy. AngelicAngelicAngelic

I try to find some, but the chinese drug store which close to me said that the powder is fake as could be seen from the price?? Hmm...i ever think to buy the real one and smash them to dust TongueTongueTongue
So...our kois will be the real jewel on water cause they just swallow the pearl dust Laugh

Vincent Wink

Handy's suggestion is certainly worthy of consideration . Pearl powder certainly will work magic . Better than refresh podwer a hundred times . SlySlySly But the cost can buy you the Grand Champion of Japan !!LaughLaughLaugh

I will be visiting some farms this year with Handy in Japan . Snowy can only take the same bus with us next year due some personal committment . Don't worry , I will certainly bring handy to the Oyster farm as well . SlySlySly I will buy Oysters while he will buy the pearls !!Sly

Next year , if you were to invite us to your house , we will have a Oyster Pancake party , dip with Pearl Powder ... sponsor by Handy !!!!SlySlySly

We will also try to organise a Koi Meeting dinner , either in Singapore or Malaysia , where all the Koi Forum guys can meet and have a good weekend together . Definitely all the cookies , pancakes , shasimi , fugu and pearl powder must be served !!! SlySlySly

Good Luck on your Paste Food .
