Tancho Can't Post

Dear forum friends,

1. I've placed an order for a Tancho with a local Koi dealer. I expect it to arrive somwhere in mid of September from Japan.

2. I've a few qusetions.
a) Heard from someone that a infant/young Tancho is not a reliable purchase. The chances of the Hi shrinkage is high. A Tancho of 25-30cm wld be a far more reliable choice.

b) Some said, it is in the gene. But I read from somewhere that by breeding two Tancho Kohaku(male/female)may not get a Tancho but a school of Kohaku instead. Hence, this comment may not even stand.

3. Wld the Tancho expert there, give us a few pieces of advice?

Regards.

Hi KOK Jong,

Replying to question (2), yes, the chances of Hi shrinkage in small Tancho is high but it all depend on its breed. I have tried several 6" to 8" Tancho and the Hi of two Tancho(s) disappeared when they grow bigger.

It is quite common for young Tancho to lose their hi due to stress or adverse water conditions. Once gone, the red will never return.

There are several other kinds of Tancho including Tancho Sanke, Tancho Showa, and even Tancho Goshiki, but the Tancho Kohaku remains the most sought after.
Tancho is not breedable and there is as much chance of obtaining a Tancho by breeding any two Kohaku as there is by breeding two Tancho.

When selecting a Tancho Sanke or Tancho Showa, one must keep in mind that the Sumi is likely to be undeveloped and therefore indistinct in a younger koi, but needs to be deep and strong in a mature koi.

Recently, I came across a Koi dealer telling that it is common practise to perform alteration on 'imperfect' tancho by doing skin surgery. I was told that this is done in Japan too except that perfect round tancho never win in competition due to the operation. Are such statements true ?

Hi
Please drop me an email and tell me which dealer or dealers does that and I will never never visit them again.

So far I have stopped visiting 2 dealers. I think the 'older ones' are more 'honest' in this trade.

Hello Mark,

I was also told by local dealers that this type of touch up was done in JAPAN and so it may have nothing to with local guys. They may not even know.

Hi Mark, altered Tanchos are not that difficult to spot. (I think Smile ) There maybe a slight shade beyond the actual cap, looks a little like a shadow.

So far there is no cosmetic surgery for koi and in view of this I have no problem spotting them. Well, some say the surgery cannot be seen... Well, I will leave it to individuals to digest this statement in the best of their experience.

Good luck.

Greeting

Reviewing what has been discussed above, I think that we must adhere to rule of thumb. In the case of that tancho, the real beauty of it is no longer maintained against the true appreciation of koi itself. On top of this we should to the very minute intention be more sensitive toward this beautiful creation, nature endowed to us.

Please email me those dealers. I will refrain myself from visiting them.

Sorry for visiting a old topic.

As I put it in Cyberfins, I knew from local (Sg) dealer that it is possible and he did it before. Also, I saw a tancho in another dealer shop that has a perfect circle with faded red on the side. It can be seen that the circle was not real. So please be careful with tancho purchase.

Not to mention the dealer names as it is their trade. It is all up to us when purchasing and this make the hobby more interesting.

Smile

'Fraid not. From what I read, the red dot is a must. Otherwise, if its a black dot, a Bekko it is, I think. It's no less beautiful, especially if you pair it with a real Tancho with the red dot. What an awesome pair they will make!

Best regards

Joshua
