Tategoi Koi Can't Post

Hi all forum members,

Learning to appreciate Koi is an art that I am still trying to learn. What other ways to improve than to have Koi forum members to give opinions and advices. No koi is perfect and everyone's taste is different. This is what makes the hobby so interesting.

What do you think of it's ratings ?

Body shape ?

Quality ?

Pattern ?

Hi Jonathan

I'm no expert but would like to give my humble opinion.

This koi is no more than 20cm, I think. Has a nice big head which is good later on. There's a lot of sumi on this showa which is well spread out but would look better with more hi near the dorsal fin area.

The white is solid and nice. Probably a little too much sumi on the pectoral fins but still OK.

For body shape, too early too tell whether it would grow into a torpedo or not!Smile

Here are my scores: Body shape : 6/10 Quality : 6/10 Pattern : 7/10

If you don't mind, how much did you pay for this beauty and from which breeder? Thanks.

Johnson

Johnson,

I am also not an expert. I am still learning. When I got the Koi, it was so skinny. I fed it and after a week (taken with this photo), it body shape is getting much better. I got it from a hobbist and fortuantely, I did not pay an arm and leg for it.

What strikes me is the pattern which is evenly distributed. What do the rest think ?

7.5/10

No worries 'bout the pectoral fin being black. My Showas have usually a lot of black on the pectorals, but as they grow, the fin clears out.

Sumi is suppose to spread, but I've 2 showas that have been doing the opposite!

Unpredictable fish....

What I been reading almost always is, the black will clear from tip end of the pectoral towards the body. Some Koi would like a few strands of black lines on the pectorals, a desired feature of Showa.

Yeah, the Sumi is something hard to predict...that's why it's a lot of fun having Showa/Utsuri.

For this Koi, I give it a 6/10 overall, with good potential

Body shape : 7/10, I like it.

Quality : 6/10

Pattern : 5/10, but Sumi will certainly improve as it grows, but Hi could be better

No hard feelings JSoon, this is just my personal opinion. Like ppl says, one man's meat is another's poison.

jsoon,

Typical showa sanshoku.

Hugh patch of motogoro on pectoral fin indicates a heavy sumi showa. Further indication see sumi on dorsal and ventral fin. Would probably loose some of the sumi when it gets bigger. Hi patch in middle of body should be larger to give a more balance look.

Good body shape and indication from the pectoral fin is a female fish.

Overall just an average koi but the fun is to breed them to 65cm to see its possible potential.

Jonathan,

I'm no expert either and just like to share my opinion. Let me know if I'm wrong as I'm learning too. The koi is about 20cm and the sumi looks like they are finished except the one patch on the back.

For a koi of this size, I would not choose one with so much sumi. That's just my opinion. This could mean that the koi is stunned or it may not grow to its full size. Otherwise, when it reach 65cm, it may turn out to be a black koi for having too much sumi.

Having said that, that is the future...but at present, this is a nice koi. I will give it a 7.

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the sharing. I am learning more each day from your opinions.

I have a few questions I would to post to all ? In a FG tank size of about 6x4x3 ft tank, should we go for a finished Showa or a tategoi one ?

Secondly, I was at a farm last week, and the Koi dealer showed me 2 Koi about 45cm and the finished Koi cost $200 lesser than the other koi whom sumi has not come out or coming out. If I will to get the latter, what are the factors beside good water quality can I help to bring out its best ?

Jonathan,

Your questions depends on what is your objective. If your dream is jumbo koi, then for a tank of 6x4x3 (2ton), you can only keep 2 jumbo koi....or you can keep 10 or so smaller koi. The smaller ones are equally beautiful except they don't have the same flare and majestic look as their jumbo cousin.

Having said that, I have also come across some jumbo koi having deformed swimming habbit probably due to the restricted amount of space of a small tank.

If I were to choose a finished koi at 65cm and a tategoi at 30cm and the tategoi is S$200 more, I will go for the finished koi anytime. Why pay more to wait for something that may never happen?

But if the finished koi is also 30cm, I will have to think twice as it may not grow much anymore.

Cheers,
Patrick

I don't really understand what is a finished koi which is at 30cm, "it does not grow anymore???" what will happen to the Koi colour ? will it get stretch and turn ugly ?

Jonathan,

May be I'm not making any sense. My idea when talking about a finished koi, it means that the koi has already grown to adult size and color, and after that, it will only go downhill. However, the physical size have nothing to do with it. A koi can reach adult or finish at any length.

Sorry if my understanding is wrong.

Cheers,
Patrick

Hmmm...ok...

Eric ever told me that when a Koi gets older, it colour will also fade along.
