The Lives & Times Of 2 Wayward Kois Can't Post

Once in a while, you come across a koi that passes the "Blink" test in an instant, but then many rational arguments come up later against buying it. Recently, it happened to me, not once but twice in a row, but I decided to follow my instincts UnsureUnsureUnsure.

The first is Olivia, a 36cm Sekiguchi Sanke (they won at All Japan for their famous showas). There she was, a leftover koi, listless and scrawny with a pinched hungry look that reminds one of "bowl in hand" OliverWinkWink with her ragged floral kimono running like watercolors in the rain. After a week in quarantine, she's off the blocks living life with a vengeance.

The second is Armstrong, a 34cm Kujaku (breeder unknown) who was down and out with 2 large and deep ulcers, teetering on the brink of death. I picked her up from the dealer when she recovered sufficiently, and after a week in quarantine with wounds still visible, she is living life so strongly that she would have made Lance Armstrong proud.

I know I am breaking all the rules -- never buy leftover or sick kois, but hey -- what is life without breaking a rule or two? Wink Especially when my fearsome Headmaster is not hovering nearby, and these two do deserve a second shot at life.

So, do join me and wish the two of them Good Luck -- they will need all the luck they can get to fulfil their potential. Go kois go -- Gambate, Gambate!! Mine is the easy part, feeding them well and keeping the water clean.

Like the proverbial Chinese that bet on which of 2 birds will fly off a flagpole first, you may wish to take a punt on who will make it to become a better koi in the end. There are no rules -- just choose your race koi, and give the reasons why she will become a better koi.

I will bowl them up for an update in 3 months.

Cheers,
Jeff

The dealer has confirmed that the kujaku is a Ogata koi. My other Ogata fish is a jumbo kohaku tosai at 50cm, so Armstrong still has a chance of making jumbo. Sekiguich has been breeding jumbo kois in the last few years, so Olivia has a decent shot at jumbo too.

Both of them are long fishes, and are eating aggressively.

Go kois Go,
Jeff

Both kois are doing fine, and swimming happily in the big pond Wink

Hi, The update is long overdue! After 7 months, I bowled both fishes up for a good look today:

Armstrong grew from 34cm in Sept 2007 to 52cm in May 2008. 18cm in 7 months! She won 2nd Prize for Hikarimono 50bu Class at the Malaysia Koi Show in March 2008!

Olivia went from 36cm to 58cm, a good 22cm growth in 7 months! I did not enter Olivia for the Koi Show as she is still a future koi.

These 2 kois have given me much joy over the last few months rescuing them and grooming them to their full potential:)

Hi there,
Very impressive growth- I like the Kujaku 's body confirmation.
Congrats on your recent win- keep it up.
Your post is interesting to read- perhaps you should write some articles for club 's magazine.
Hkk
Mohan. Cool

Hi Jeff,

Don't mean to hijack your thread. It's quite common that leftover koi is being over-looked by hobbiest but if they look carefully sometimes they will find some 'crown jewels'. As an example, I found this Sekiguchi Kindai Showa in an over-crowded pond and can't resist to get 'her' home. It is a good eater and pretty sure it will grow well as it is one of the biggest fish in the same batch.

Hi Etano,

Nice looking showa there, full of promise. The kind that gives your adrenaline a kick ;)

I like the pattern and thick tail tube, and hints of a bulky body to come. Is it female and what are the measurements now?

Best Regards,
Jeff

It's too young to tell the gender. About 25cm now, will keep you posted in the future.

Hi GC,

Will certainly do so. Just fed my fish for the night, and checked her out -- her netting is getting more beautiful, and her hump quite bewitching ;)

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Etano,

What a good find your kinda showa.
I remember a japanese breeder once told me that sometimes a fish and koi lover is destined for each other.

From the look of the pectoral fin it is a female. Interesting to see pix when it bigger.

My heart is broken now because the showa has lost all its beni. I transfered the fish over to my concrete pond about a week ago and just a fews days later I noticed the color fading and now it is turning into a shiro. I asked a few friends and the dealer, it seems there is nothing much I can do and the beni is not likely to come back. I attribute this problem to water temperature since it has been very hot for the past one week or so.Frown

Elmen,

Really sad to hear about that. Hopefully, you will end up with a beautiful shiro utsuri when the sumi surface and consolidate later on.
