Traditional showa vs modern showa Can't Post

hi koi experts out there Smile

How does one differentiate the two types of showa? What makes a traditional showa a show grade one?

regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

So, are you going to show up with your Showa for the Show? (MKC Show 13-16 September 2001 Kuala Lumpur). Anyway, I am no expert but here's my two cents' worth on a Showa:

Apart from good body shape and size, your Showa should possess wavy, symmetrically black markings all over the body, including the abdomen. The fish would boast of a rounded block of black markings (motoguro) on its pectoral fins. Not to miss out "wavy and lightning-like black markings" in the head region. There's your winner!

Got all that from the net! Now, will the real expert comment?

Hi, I'm no expert in this but I think the modern showa or kindai showa has more white on it's body than the traditional showa. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Smile

Got a bit about the Kindai from the net. A traditional Showa has red markings ON white patterns formed on black base. A Kindai (so this is the modern Showa!) Showa has large dominating white OVER the red and black markings. Hmmm. Looks like the key is: white on top instead of red on top. Am I right? Or did I blow this one?

hi Joshua and dttk
Thanks for the insights. I happen to have both types of showa and looking at them, both have their strong points. The traditional showa has more sumi and reds and their whites appear at the lower half of the lateral body. The hi of the traditional showa are most orangy than red (as in kohaku red). Kindai showa on the other hand, the hi appeared redder. I am keeping an eye on one of my showa (kindai) and hopes it is tategoi Smile

Dennis, with your keen eye for beauty and your dogged pursuit of perfection, I will not be surprised to see many more champions from your hand. We are all waiting for your Kindai to change from tategoi to a living jewel so do tell us when she blooms...

Cheers!

Hi Dennis,

Tategoi may take months or even years to develop fully. Lots of patience required. Who know, you might be the potential owner of this winner Koi in the next Koi show.

Any picture to share and where did you buy your Tatekoi if I may ask ?

hi guys
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have just acquired a 1.2 ton (internal volume) tank to house the better kois. I want to prevent overcrowding and right now, there are only 1 large koi (60cm), 3 medium (30 -40 cm) and 4 baby kohakus. I am just enjoying the hobby though I have a 2-time champion SKC fish. Maybe this beauty should retire and enjoy her life onwards. The other two kois are tategoi - one a showa and the other a kujaku. I like the baby kohakus too which I have picked up the best 4 from my other tank of baby kohakus to see their potential.

regards
Dennis
