Hi guys,

Thanx for all the narration (some say temptations) and wonderful pictures. Looks like everyone had a good time there. Love the Nisai Kohaku. Looking forward to seeing it next year after harvesting at Sansai!

Cheers..

LArz, I like kois with a big Hi pattern. When the white shows up as the koi grows, it shud be an imposing look. This koi does not have a long body but I do like a powerful body which is what the mother koi has. I used the word Cheroot instead of cigar. Cheroot as we have them here are mini rolled tobacco which is favoured by the older generation, especially our Indain friends.I have more photos to upload that will cover the Nigata journey.

We have three hours of video tape material which will be edited and played during our Koi club AGM.

Re: [dtbh] Visit to the Homeland of Nishikigoi - Japan [In reply to] Can't Post

Have been unable to log on the past few days. Thanks Hwong for the photos. Anyone took photos of my Ms Universe nissai? Anyhow here goes.

Niigata was very different from Hiroshima. And I am not talking about the landscape….

There used to be a direct flight from Hiroshima to Niigata. Due to the drop in human traffic after the last Niigata earthquake, the flight has been cancelled indefinitely. We did the next logical thing by taking a flight to Haneda Airport, Tokyo (1hr 15min) and from there took the shinkansen (1.5hrs) to our destiny.

Being the Yakui-san we were, we took the first flight out of Hiroshima as it involved the cheapest fare and understandably it was fully booked for the day. It still cost us about RM500+ each. The shinkansen was comfortable and in no time we were at Niigata. The Station Hotel is attached to the station (what else can we expect with such an appropriate name) and was just a couple of minutes’ walk. As it was Deepavali we celebrated with Mohan-san by having lunch at the nearby McDonalds….on Mohan of course. LOL (Thanks Mohan). It must be your most memorable Deepavali ever.

After lunch Oomo-san (who speaks very good English) and Nogami-san came in separate MPVs to fetch us koi hunting. We needed 2 MPVs cos Oomo-san also had guests dealers from Wales. Our first stop was at the Sakai facility famous for the matsunosuke sanke (elder brother). Here Ng claimed his long lost matsunosuke sanke (story too long to tell and we had been bored to death by his constant lamenting of his long lost sanke) which Sakai-san so graciously replaced. As a token of appreciation Ng and I bought a nissai sanke each. I must add that on our way up the hills we still saw remnants of the ruins left behind by the destructive last earthquake. Nogami-san remarked that as so many kois esp tosais were lost, this year’s harvest was not as productive and they expect production to be back to normal in the next couple of years. We next went to Ikarashi Koi Farm where we saw some high grade kois. As the price was just as high we did not buy any. By this time it was already dark. We headed back to the hotel to have a short rest before dinner hosted by Oomo-san and Nogami-san. Mano-san of Dainichi joined us later.

As mentioned at the start (kois) in Niigata was very different. Due to the colder climate and shorter mudpond season kois were generally smaller and more slender age for age. This was especially obvious this year where the season was shortened by the devastating effects of the last earthquake. So many concrete ponds and mudponds (together with their kois) were lost. To get an idea how big the quake was, Oomo-san said that water was splashed to human height from their ponds.

After the sumptuous dinner we adjourned back to the hotel where we talked late into the night. The topic was on koi of course.

We met again early next morning. Nogami-san fetched us first to Marusho (?spelling) Koi Farm where we say some great ginrin sankes. Did not buy any as we wanted to keep our options open as pond space was diminishing fast. The next stop was at Kaneko Koi farm famous for her shiro utsuris and kujaku. Hwong bought a nissai shiro, which I personally felt, was a good buy. Perhaps a photo from Hwong later.

Oomo koi farm came next. Here we saw some great showas (which he is known for). Oomo-san was so kind to let some of us to buy 2 of his tosai tategois. Hwong and Mohan-san managed to buy one each. We then adjourned to Nogami Koi Farm. Here we saw some great kohakus. Unfortunately most of his good ones were sold.

After lunch we visited the 2nd facility of Nogami, then Dainichi, Marudo and Seitaro Koi Farms in that order. As expected the kohakus and showas of Dainichi were great. Despite the hefty prices Mohan-san eventually bought a showa after a few days of deliberation. Good for you, Mohan. I did not manage to see my Dainichi nissai sanke which was still in the mudpond. Hopefully she is ok and I hope it will be shipped back together with the purchase we made this trip.

We thought it was appropriate that we host the last dinner in Niigata after being shuttled around for 2 days by the breeders. Nogami-san, Marusho-san and youngest brother of Dainichi Koi Farm attended (he speaks excellent American English).

After another late night we headed for Tokyo the next morning. At the shinkansen station we met another group of dealers from Holland who bought many kois from the younger brother of matsunosuke fame ie Toshio Sakai. I think you all won’t be interested in our non-koi experience of Tokyo where we spent a day before we left for home.

To sum it all up the trip was well worth it and we really look forward to our next trip. Hmmm...wonder when it will be?

Cheers, dtbh

Taking you back to Sakai Hiroshima,

While there, there were buyers from Europe with deep pockets and we made sure we didnt do any negotiations with Kentaro on those occasions. These guys do know their kois and were prepared to pay and with the strong Euro, everything seem cheap Unimpressed

Talking about pricing. Everytime, we asked Kentaro to price a decent looking koi, He will exclaimed " Waahhhh very nice!!! You have good eye...Then he will phone his father or uncle. We go..."Oh shit" At times all three SOn, Father and Uncle will be there. Then Double Shit!! PirateTAKAI!! We will remind them that we all have the same surname: YASUI! There after we were Yasui-San

The best strategy to buy is to give them a target price and have them select a few kois for your selection. Often you will see kois you overlooked or just didnt have sharp enuf eye for.

Another thing we were let in on after many rounds of "KAnPAi" The breeders can tell 70% of the time if a koi is female even when they are under 20cm!!! But they wont teach I bet. On the positive side, you still have the 30% that they missed

Hello Dr. Teh,

Many thanks to you, Mohan and Hwong for sharing photos of your very beautiful kois. I must say, I am just as excited when
it was first posted and could only wish that I was the proud owner.
I have been informed that some of the kois will be here in the next few days to be kept under quarantine at your premises.
May I ask whether it is possible to be invited over to view these beautiful kois and your pond then. I know I will not be able
to afford to purchase kois of such high grade but hopefully as a consolation, I gets to at least view them in person.
By the way, we have met before at the Janda Baik Koi Mud Pond Harvest with Luke a couple of months ago.

Hwong

It is a wonderful job. I thought you are only good at shooting but only now I realize you are good at shooting pictures as wellLaugh.

Believe me you,you had mesmerized me with your vivid, candid and resplendent pixs.Your caption is like adding icing to the cake. This Nissai (from pix) feels - so far the striking one was 'Tosai to Jumbo'Wink - can we expect more?

I am waiting for the photos of the adventure at the Dainichi Farm on the 5th day where while the others were viewing some Kohakus, Yang and I looked into a pond full of Nissai Showas in a riot of colours - moving gracefully and languorously which took our breath away. When I saw a beautiful Kindai Showa, my heart stopped one beat and I pointed to Yang. Later, I saw Fuji Oomo-san (breeder and owner of Oomo Koi Farm, famous for beautiful Showas) sitting at one corner and looking at the gleaming colourful Nissai Showas. I asked him to pick one good Showa. He looked magnanimously and pointed to the same Kindai Showa I admired. We brought it out for closer observation. This time my heart must have stopped several beats, I told Oomo-san that it had a close resemblance to Kato-san's ever famous Inasuma Showa. The shiro, hi and sumi were of similar quality and the marking on the face was almost similar and Oomo-san gave a big 'yesssssss'. Shigeru Mano, the youngest of the Manos dropped a bombshell when he quoted the price. As we were at the tail end of the koi hunt and almost exhausted and short of time, we could not spend more time in Dainichi Farm - a farm that I could visit only in my dreams so far. In short,we could not complete the negotiation and continued it. That evening we had dinner with Mano, Nogami and Makata Tanaka of Marusyo Koi Farm but the atmosphere was not right to strike a deal. Finally, we confirmed vide a phone call from Tokyo at the price demanded by Dainichi. I was hell-bent on getting it at any rate and luckily we managed to bring it home. I have not seen the pix of this Showa yet and hope to see it posted here soon . Hwong, before my heart comes to a permanent stop pls post the pix Laugh. I'm cocksure others are waiting also .Are you???Crazy

On the same morning, Hwong and I purchased a Tosai each at Oomo Koi Farm which he obstinately sold us. Will narrate the story on another occasionSmile.

Well guys are you satisfied with the kois and excited by the stories? - Do let us have your input. Educative and honest comments are welcomeWinkLaugh.

Hi Hwong,

I think it is a matter of when, though we don't have any plans at all. We will post if we do go up for the pilgrimage.

We do have a very knowledgeable member that is in Japan most of his time and he has access to quite a number of good backyard breeders of good lines. Perhaps we can do things differently, who knows. Whichever way we do it, we are spoilt for choice. A subject for later comptemplation.

Cheers..

Dear Thiam Hwa,

I have no problem. Will have to ask the rest for their greenlight. Once I get their go ahead and when the kois are stable I will arrange a pond visit. Meanwhile you can pm me your contact phone.

Yep, sadly mama Ms Universe is history. In the last spawning she apparently had egg impaction and died. Only managed to produce 87 not-so-good offsprings. On the same note, mama Big Rose will not produce any kohaku in the coming season...she has been paired with a sanke to produce good-bodied sankes.

Ah yes, Dennis, as an update, remember my Ms Universe tosai who was in the mudpond? I saw her in the flesh for the first time. She has done well and is now 56cm. Good body, shiroji and beni to boot. One of the trip members took her photo and when I get them I will post them for all to see.

All the kois are expected back end of this month. The delay is cos of the KHV hoohaa and SFF need special certs for kois to be exported. Good precautionary measures.

Hi there,

By the way ,one of the reason for picking the Inasuma Kohaku was,I was told it was the offspring of Miss Universe but it turned out to be the offspring of Rose Symbol - a offspring of BIG ROSE. As I had high hopes on this koi I took it - I like the striking inasuma pattern .Further it has pure snow white skin & a good body shape.Best of all it has a thick ozutzu( tail part ). It remains me of Takigawa's champion koi story where he said 'the tail part has to be thick almost to bursting'. Unlike many ,I go for the pattern & then the body shape etc etcSmileWink.

Hi Mohan,

I have given my opinion while looking at the koi with you in Japan. You are right in that this is a good quality koi with good skin, shiroji and beni. The tail tube is thick. My reservations are, as I have opined while in Japan, is that the hi pattern is a bit too narrow and the head size suggests that she won't be a big fish; at least not in my pond. You have a better chance in your big pond. I normally try to imagine when the koi puts on girth and opens up during which case the "narrowness" of the hi may be accentuated. Since pattern is important to you, I must say you have made a reasonable choice. Again I must add that I have made many wrong judgements many times and I will be glad for you if I am wrong again. Whatever it is I am sure you will enjoy this koi in the years to come.

Cheers, dtbh

Hi Hwong,
Well Done. You certainly have purchased a very stunning Inazuma Kohaku and
Kaneko Shiro Utsuri. I really admire the Inazuma pattern with it's dark and bright Hi
and body formation on the kohaku and likewise the snow white on the Kaneko Shiro.
I think the main issue now is whether one can maintain the shine and lustre skin quality
of these kois in our local water parameters. I often notice from our local koi dealers
that their kois will tense to lose out on the colours and skin lustre after sometimes.
I honestly hope that it will not happen to these beautiful kois.
By the way, when is the schedule date for the AGM meeting?

Many Thanks and Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa
