So fellas, Why did we not buy the koi above?? time to test your knowledge.

This Nisai kohaku had a jumbo typed body and pattern we wud normally snap up. Why didnt we buy this koi? The breeder was very honest when we asked him about a flaw we werent sure about. So what is the flaw?

My guess as to why you passed on the first one would be;
#1 The hi odome on the tail tube breaks too late.
#2 Hi a bit too heavy at the front making it slightly unbalanced.

On the second the only real drawback I can see in the pic is the hi on the tail tube us much smaller compared to the rest of the koi.

Otherwise the Hi and Shiro looks very good on both. Kio like these would command a very large pricetag here in the US.

Hi Mohan,
What more can one say to such beautiful kois especially with my
limited knowledge and being a new beginner to the world of kois.
I only have a wish-list containing if only I could have this koi
or that koi in my pond, wouldn't that be nice.
I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to Hwong for doing such a
wonderful job posting all these pix. for all to share.
With my limited knowledge on kois, I will try to answer to Hwong
posting of the 2 kohakus:-
1) Koi No. 1 - I agreed with Larz1 that the Hi on the tail section
should be 2-3 cm clear away. The dorsal fin should also be clear
of the Hi colour. There is also a question of whether it will be a
jumbo koi becos' of the short body.
2) Koi No. 2 - I think the kiwa and sashi are not clearly define and
also the Hi colour did not appear very strong as compared to
Hwong's Cheroot shape Nisai Kohaku.
Those are just my humble opinion.
Best Regards,
ThiamHwa

Hello there HWong , how are you doing?

One thing that i must agree and emphasize is the fact that all the pictures that you guys have posted showed us fantastic looking kois.

I must also say that even though i am very new in this hobby , we can seem to get these sort of quality Kois from the local koi suppliers ...........

I guess if we were to get these sort of quality , i am sure there will be more Koi hobbyist

One quetsion that i would like to post to all you guys who made this recent trip is the fact that when it come to their filtration system and water quality , were are we in respect to what is being done differently with Japan.

Other then the fact the water is supplied from the mountians......, i believe there is more than just the bloodline alone to get such high quality Koi's.

I must say each time i go into this appreciation forum , the pictures are fantasitc of you visit.

Thank you for these great pictures

Larz1, Thiamhwa

Ok let see why we or at least I, didnt pick koi #1
A) Realatively short snout and small head. Body widens at the pectoral fin area- signs that it will be a stout but short koi. Tail is relatively narrow. This koi is much smaller compared to her siblings.
B) poor shashi on right side. Hi on dorsal. Lack od Odome but not really an issue
C) Hi patch -small

Koi #2. This koi has everything we wished for. Excellent Blue print for a Jumbo specimen, The pattern although simple has a big enuf Hi patch that will sho weel when you see more white as it grows. except
A) While the Hi is good and relatively even on the front, the hi patch at the tail is very weak. At first, we felt that this may be due to stress and bcos of the good front end, the tail Hi may recover later. We aksed Kentaro-san for his advice and he told us that the Hi will not recover and we shud not choose this koi.

Scuba

I am sorry to say that not all the kois at the farm are of the quality you see on this thread. In fact there are many of lesser quality but there are also plenty of much higher quality as well. The quality is reflected in the price. Koi #2 is a typical example. If her tail hi was as good as the front end, her price wud have been 3 times! When you go there kois can be had for as low as 50.000Yen to ???? for kois of same age. So llike one airline says "Everyone can Fly" Hobbyist shud not be intimidated to visit the farms in Japan. It is a very rewarding experience.

Pls don't misunderstand me about not been able to see high quality kois at our local dealers. I was saying that the dealers takes too much risk bringing in high quality kois bcos he may not be able to sell the koi bcos the pattern that he thought is beautiful may not tickle his customers.

The dealers filteration system is not the best example of an ideal one for you. His kois are only in transition and they also change a lot of water as High as 20% daily. I have been to the home of another koi dealer. Here he has literally Millions of ringgit worth of koi in his ponds. The filteration system is a hybrid of submerged , shower, powerfilter (sand media) but one thing is common. His ponds are highly aerated.

Hello there Hwong , how are you doing?

Thank you for the insight on how the pond are maintained in japan its always good to know , so that we can somehow benchmark our filteration to that in Japan.

I guess for me the biggest concern is how well we can filter our water and maintain good water quality and parameters , i guess changing 20% water daily will not be cost effective for us.

Thank you for your attention.

Hi Hwong,

based on your observations from the farms you've visited, do these breeders really use spring water or water from the mountain in their concrete ponds? If that's the case there is nothing much we can do to achieve their level in quality koi supply. Even if we purchase a quality koi from them eventually the quality will deteriorate once it reaches our local ponds.

Hello there,
As promised let me update you with the latest development.

All the kois from the Sakai Farm arrived safely on the 25th day of Nov 05 & they are in the respective quarantine tanks-Yang,Dr Teh & myself. I gathered that Dr Teh's Ms universe offspring was kept back by Kentaro san due to an oversight. I think it is a blessing in disguise bcos in the recent issue of the NICHIRIN he said.I quote "mud ponds are more advantages for young koi in obtaining a good structure than concrete ponds though "- good luck!

Rest of the kois will be at Luke's place in a matter of time.
I will keep you informed of developments.

Re: [kelabukoi] Visit to the Homeland of Nishikigoi - Japan [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Halim,

Sorry, I missed your post. Sakai Hiroshima uses water from the stream that flows through their farm. This water is from the mountains but whether its is just rain water or spring water, I dont know. The other farms in Nigata that we have visited eg; Oomo-san told us that his water is ground water from artesian wells. In his case, his water has very little heavy metals or the like and he uses them straight from the well.

While I believe the minerals in the water do contribute to the koi's quality, I think the nutrition they give their top kois are vastly different from the pellet feed we use. I am told that these kois are fed with special formulated paste food that consist of gorunded pellets, vitamins, beneficial bacteria, oyster, etc etc . Of course the qualifier is always good water management.
Another factor that may be contributory is the rest and consolidation that kois grown in cold climates during the winter months.

According to one long time koi keeper, the warm weather here encourages the koi to eat a lot all year round. This contiunous growth does not give the koi any break like those in cold climates and the quality can only be retained for 5 or 6 years at most. So he recommends that we should purchase only tosais or nisais from Japan.

That educative explanation gave me some food for thought-thanks.

I understand that all the kois have gone into the the main pond & they are doing well.

The rest of the kois will be in Luke's place on the 14th instant.

Hello F M,
Thanks for your input & PM.

For the latest development, the kois reached Luke's place safely as sch.

Most of it is taken home by the respective owners. I took back my Dainichi Showa & it is now in my small pond which
I am using for quarantine purposes. I like to share with you that it is far better & safer to quarantine in a pond than in a
tank. Perhaps bcos of the natural atmosphere.
I will post a pix of the two kois & the Oomo tosai which is kept back until next year. The episode leading
to the purchase of the two tosai ( another by Hwong ) at Oomo farm is a fascinating one which I will narrate at a later date.

Hi Hwong, Dr Teh and Mohan,
I am a late comer but you guys just took our breath away with your exciting adventures. This is everybody Koi Lover's dream to go and visit the home land. The quality of the Koi is just undescriptably GOOD!!!!!!WinkWinkLaughSlyLaugh. It must have taken a lot of planning and coordination. Mind to share some of the planning. How you plan and how long before hand? It is good to know the story behind the scene. How much is a trip like this cost in terms of food and living expenses? You mind to share? All your expertise in your field counts very well in getting QUALITY KOI. Excellent!! We will have to plan something like this one day...At least have a chance to see it although definitely slight chance to bring some beauty home by hand.

Thanks for being so kind in sharing all your photos and story and please keep coming especially with my questions too!!! heheheheeSlyLaughWink

Re: [sunshinekoi] Visit to the Homeland of Nishikigoi - Japan [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Sunshinekoi,

Koi hunting whether local or to the homeland of koi is always an exciting event. The main difference is that over in Japan there is a concentration of high quality kois which will be eventually sent to the rest of the world. Many of these kois will never reach our shores as they will be too expensive for dealers to import them and hope that someone will like them. As such it is worthwhile to see with our own eyes what is meant by really beautiful kois.

The whole trip cost us about RM6500. This includes all transport, food and lodging. The time required to plan for the trip depends on too many factors. In general, if you have someone (usually a local dealer) to take you around you just have to contact the dealer and he will do the planning. I understand Sentul Koi Park will be planning koi hunting trips in the near future as their parent company ie YTL has bought over a big travel agency that has dealings with tours to Japan. As regards the timing, if one wants to buy tosais one usually go there in April and for nissais and bigger kois it is during autumn when these kois will be harvested from their respective mudponds. If one wants to save money I will advise him to visit Sakai Hiroshima where one can see the whole range of koi varieties....good quality ones at that. A 3 day/2 nights trip will probably cost RM3-4k.

Hope this will give you a general idea of planning a koi hunting trip to Japan.

Dr. Teh,
Thank you for your info. In fact it is not easy to plan a trip this way which need to consider a lot of factors especially during the buying and handling of those beautiful kois from going one place to another. I am still learning and hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel some day. You guys was such a great team! Hopefully one day I can have the priviledge to pay a visit to your pond and others too with your team member permission. Smile

Thanks again to all the great pics / adventures / valuable info from you, Hwong and Mohan.

The handling is not an issue. It will be done by the breeder/dealer. All you need to do is to part with your money!!!LOL. The purchased kois will be practically sent to your doorstep.

Mr. Hwong, It had been quiet some time and I hope you still remember. I am looking at the short stout koi you are referring to. Comparing among the koi which posted here, I can see this koi has a small stout head but not too sure about the body widens at the pectoral fin area. I kindly seek your advise - Are you referring to the body of the koi that curve out more to the front then curve in to the back? Most of the Koi seen here is curving more out toward the back The second question is does this two character, short stout head and wide body at the pectoral areas indicate it is a short koi or when one of these criteria meet, it will be a short koi? If not, what other criteria need to consider? 3rd question is there a way to tell a koi below 20cm that it is either a short or jumbo koi in the future? 4th Question - "tail is relatively narrow" - is this referring to the tail that is thin or it is short? I hope my questions don't bored you.Crazy SunshineKoi

Sakai Kohaku brought home from Japan-2005.

It was around Nov 2005. When a few of our Kohakus arrived from Japan. I remember collecting it from Yang’s place. Dev Chong and Thiam Hwa were around.

This koi was 51cm then, I mistakenly assumed that it was 54cm.Today; it has grown to 61cm. It is the offspring of Rose Symbol. Lately, a beautiful awesome Richard’s Yokosona emerged. I came to know that it is the offspring of Rose symbol as well. How nice to know that my beloved koi is the sister of Yokosona. Yokosona is the ‘emperor’, I will be happy if my koi at least becomes the ‘King’ if not the emperor.

This koi is an unbelievable eater. It will come from no where and make a frantic charge for the food – especially paste food. When pallets are thrown it goes missing.

What I like and love in this koi is the soft skin and the very very tame nature. It is growing slowly and I think it will take time to reach Jumbo status.

This koi was the smallest of the lot from the batch that we picked at Sakai Farm during our last trip to the homeland of the Nishikigoi.

There were many enquires about this koi. Even when in Singapore, our judge, Alan Chin asked me about it. Well, I am happy to know that it had enraptured many a heart. I am posting the pixs of the mother and sister. Your comments please.
