What do you think about this kohaku? Can't Post

Any comments on this kohaku? It is around 30cm now. I bought it from Nippon at the koi show.

Cheers,
Patrick

Mmm...even and balanced patterns. Nice bright red and snow white skin!Smile Got quite a big head and I think it has got good potential.

From which part of Japan? Is it expensive? Care to share?

Thanks.

Johnson,

When I first bought it was around 25cm. The price was S$180 and I negotiated down to S$150. Good price huh CoolCoolCool

I don't think it is any expensive breed but I was attracted by the color and the white.

Cheers,
Patrick

2 step, very balanced, but not terribly exciting (the pattern lah), hey but at $150 can't expect good shape, white skin and then some inazuma lightning strike pattern and good blood line some more right. The red might shrink as the fish grows and that might make it look even better. The kiwa on the first red patch is a bit fuzzy.... guess it's just some colour at the edge receeding.

Like you said, pay pennies, get pennies. Pay penuts get monkey... Wink

Kevin,

Don't like that lay...S$150 is a lot of money to me you know. LaughLaughLaughLaugh

Anyway, thanks for your comments. I agree with you that the pattern is very simple.

BTW, my pond is going to be done soon (in the next 2 weeks). My wife already told me upfront that I can only have 8koi + 1 black koi. My pond is 10ton and I'm thinking of growing 9 jumbo koi. Any recommendation as to what the 8 koi should be? I have in my mind is: 3 kohaku, 1 platinum ogon, 1 shushi, 1 orange ogon, 1 tancho, 1 sanke.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Patrick

nice koi
but to be picky...the pattern isn't very "good"
but if u like it then it's fine
it's no show koi for sure though
and don't think it will be one with time

Eh patrick.. no offence man. S$150 is RM300 and that's about as much as I'd pay for a koi too, but at that kind of price, my dealer always recommends to go for body shape and then white. Never mind the pattern. Can't have everything. If the pattern on your koi was a little more spectacular, it would have been triple the price... Wink

Hmmm, black koi... I suppose u could get away with a Chagoi and call it black? No showa? No kujaku? 9 koi very hard to pick loh..... Crazy

Kevin,

No offence on showa and kujaku....but my wife really resent anything that has a lot of black. She calls it "Tai-ko".

How I envy your 70 ton pond and you can have 50 different variety of kois.

Patrick

Hi Patrick ,

I read an article which recommend 3 kohaku , 2 sanke , 2 showa & 2 other varities . Too many other varieties will make the pond looks a bit complicated .
But I think what most important is your own taste,. important.

For me , I like more red color kois in my pond . Nice to see especially when all of them up to surface to grab for food.

Regards

Smile

Re: [chong] What do you think about this kohaku? [In reply to] Can't Post

Chong,

Seems like we are in the same wavelength. I ever read a koi book about the different varieties of koi and it mentions that koi hobby always starts from kohaku. And then people always get distracted by other varieties. At the end, they always come back to Kohaku.

I agree that nothing is more beautiful than a pond full of jumbo kohaku swimming effortlessly in the pond.

I like showa too but just find that they are a little too tan for my taste. Smile

Cheers,
Patrick

Ha HA ha! Patrick, 8+1.... Good luck unless you are from another planet with tremendous restraint.Sly Well you can still keep that number with plenty of turnover. Dont like, sell, dont like give away( give us a call first) Most keepers will have a base of kohaku(60%) 1st, then the rest. I would highly rec a good Q kujaku and kindai showa. Good pattern Sanke is very hard to come by. With your low numbers I suggest you invest a little to get better and slightly bigger kois 25-30cm.. I just read somewhere that since kois grows broader at the shoulder, the HI on the shoulder should be substantial in young koi.

Hwong,

That's what I worry about. Don't tell my wife, but this is my plan...going to buy 8 first, and then slowly add one at a time when she is not paying attention...but by the time she realize, it is too late...hahaha

Promise not to tell my wife though. Laugh

A good quality Kujaku would be a very good addition. There's not necessary to have 'black' in the Kujaku unless you consider the reticulation pattern as black.

A gin rin Kohaku would be nice..... and I would almost always consider a tancho a kohaku too.....

Showas are up to your taste... Some ppl find them too strong (colour wise). I like showas.

Re: [Chingbee] What do you think about this kohaku? [In reply to] Can't Post

It seems that Kohaku is the most popular choice. You can have a pond without chagoi, asagi, and the list but I don't think you have seen a pond have all others but without Kohaku. In fact most ppl have more than one kohaku but usually one of each other specise only.

The red and white with unique variety of petterns on each kohaku makes it outstanding against most others. That is why one is no enough. However, a pond community must have a mix all differrent type to break the monotony.

Best regards

I would go for 1-2 very nice kohakus, 1 sanke, 1 showa, 1 asagi, 1 yamabuki ogon, 1 purachina ogon, 1 shiro utsuri and 1 kujaku/1 goromo.

That would make up my 9 fishes!Smile One man's meat is of course another's poison!!Wink

8 +1 black, ah -- ha ! , that has definately to do with fung shui, i recently read from somewhere that according to fung shui, it is best to do with 8 RED n 1 black fish, (same with goldfish), if ur wife read in details, then i think u'll have to buy all 8 kohaku or orange coloured koi, hope she doesnt read all that, , hehehe,

i bought 1 black koi recently, local koi, from an aquarium shop, a nice, but rather skinny, n seems to be blind, i c that it cant really get the food like the 9 others do, i would like to addmore kois, what do u think ? suggestions ?,

btw, another fung shui point is to have the number of fish in the multiple of nine,if i m not mistaken, hehehe, that means all of u can add fishes till it reaches number 99 ! hahahahah,

Eh PAtrick, that means can get 18koi..... Eh, that's not too bad. Got more choices to make. Hmmm.... actually 18koi in your pond might not be too bad. U're not going to get all koi that get up to jumbo 24inches plus. U'd be lucky to get 3-4 to that size (unless u're thinking more Chagoi, then forget I said 3-4koi at 24inches!)... or unless you're going to buy them all big?

WEll.... guess you could start with 9... and when the wife starts counting more than 9, u tell her u're aiming for 18 yah? LaughLaughLaugh

    Hey,

You guys are bad TongueTongueTongueTongue. Teach me how to bluff my wife. UnsureUnsureUnsure (just kidding).

Any case, this goes to show that you can never have enough koi in your pond no matter how big the pond is. I believe Kevin has about 50-60 in his 70ton pond. Any one else have higher score than that? Please...no koi farm owner please. Smile

Any ways, thanks so much for the suggestion on what koi to get. It gives me a lot of idea on what to choose after I soak my pond. My pond is now completed construction but still waiting for the 7th month (ghost month) to pass before I pour water. Another 2 more weeks to go.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

    I have 55 in a 450 gal vat. Tongue

But my pond is also very over stocked. I have about 40 ranging from 4" up to 16" in a 3,000 gal pond. I need to sell some shortly as they are growing too fast for the current pond. My new 12,500 gal (excluding filter) pond will not be ready till later this year due to various problems (not koi related).

    Stuart,

For the 55, these are your baby koi right? Smile

So 40 koi for 3000gal (approx. 13ton) of water, so it works out to be around 0.3ton per fish.

This is a little overloaded right? I was told the most optimum is to have 1 fish per 0.5ton to 1ton.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

Yes Patrick these 55 are my babies Sly. I have a good filter running on it and airstones in the pond. Also have a little playground for them with some 4" pipe sections so they can hide and play chase etc. Tongue. They seem to be loving it and even feed from the surface when I am nearby, which I am told is very rare for fry on their own.

I agree with you as I have also heard that each koi will require between 05. - 1 ton of water. I don't suppose anyone knows the formular to narrow this down to how much water a koi of a particular size would require ?

    Stuart,

Seems like you are on your way to become a koi breeder in UK soon. SmileSmileSmile

For the 0.5ton - 1 ton, I believe the measurement is average from 30cm to 50cm respectively. At least this is what I heard. Of course, we are assuming that the filter is big enough to support the bio load.

    Anyone has more accurate measurement?

    Cheers,
    Patrick
