What is the differnece between Japanese Koi and Domestic ones? Can't Post

HiSmile,

I'm new to Koi and would like to know what big difference is there between Koi bred in Japan and Koi bred here locally ? And why are bloodlines so important ? Thanks in advance for all the replies....

Hi,

I think is the quality wise...

Japanese breed tends to be more rich in color...

Cheers,

this topic was discussed more times than i could recall and yet i still have some doubts as to how to differentiate between them, i mean to put on writing. Only i can say is that i think i could tell immediately whether the koi is local or from Japan simply by looking at them but then again......

TanSL should be able to give some pointers.

    Hi,

I'm amazed. I've never seen anything like this over here around KL.

Anyway, my comments on local Koi are posted under "Koi Appreciation: Most definitely expensive".

    Cheers

Just a little curious why u bought this koi at this price knowing it is a local koi? Many ppl believe local koi doesn't grown up nice and for 350 u can get a reasonably good Jap koi at that side.SlyCan u share with us your reason for defying the general perception?Sly

    Hi guys,
I am very new in this forum and also in koi's world. I just started this hobby on Jan this year but I read a lot about this hobby. As what I can see, even if the koi is from a local breeder, sometime it can compete the Jap kois especially on colour and shape. Now I have 11 kois (range between 12 - 20 cm). 2 of them are Taiwan kois and the rest are local breeder kois. The local breeder are much more preety than the Taiwan kois (colour & shape).

    hi koifun

it is bcos, of her mother's koi was a aka muji 90cm, it is quite hard to buy a tosai from a japanese breeder to become a 90cm jumbo, but from a "aka muji kohaku" there more higher chances to get get jumbo, from this batch breeding not much kohaku had been successful, so the prices are abit high, but u compare to japanese the prices for these pattern & quality it will cost u a bomb Pirate.

    happy koiing

    Hi, Chris

    I see ur point.

So Aka muji kohaku if bred locally still have the potential to fetch high premium. How far away is your aka muji closer to the look of its parent ? Possible to look almost alike?

I have to concur. If you are looking for jumbo aka muji, Nippon is the place to go. The mother (or in some cases, the grandmother) was a grand champion aka muji in Japan (90cm).

When I went there, some of the babies where already packed in plastic bag ready to go. The size of these were generally 25cm and the price was between S$200-400 depending on size. I was told that they were only 6 months. These were actually selected from the whole lot and guranteed to be jumbo. The guy actually show me the comparison between these and their smaller brother of the same age. The small bothers where selling at 3 for $10 and their size were only 10cm as compare to 25cm.

As for jumbo kohaku, I didn't know they actually breed the aka muji with kohaku in Nippon to produce jumbo kohaku. Will check it out.
