Whats the difference ? Can't Post

Hi All,

Can someone tell me the difference between a Sanke and a Showa ?.

It is somthing to do with the Hi or Sumi (i.e. which one is more present) ?.

This has often puzzled me.

Thanks in advance.

Ken

Hi Sanke Shocked,

Hi Ken (Sanke), Welcome to the Forum, Glad you decided to join after all this time. (Ken works with me in LondonWink)

QBW1, Totally agree with you there. I would say your description is spot on.

Sanke are also know as Taisho Sanke. Showa are also know as Showa sansholu.

While we are on th Subject of Koi types. I have a question about one of my Kawarimono's.

One of my kois is Black all over but has Gold around the edges of its fins (all of them) and tail. The under body is also Gold. this colour is not yellow or orange but like a metalick Gold. The body is pretty much a Magoi.

The clostest type I can see it as is a cross between a Karasugoi and a Hageshiro (without the gold head).

I did not buy this koi as it was given to me by my dad along with a few other rejects (or so he thought, it was a Magoi at the time he gave it to me).

I will try and get a picture this weekend if I can, but he is very quick and not very tame so he may be a bit of a devil to catch. He's only about 7". Crazy.

Hi Sanke, I would prefer to use a different criteria to differentiate between Sanke and Showa. Because the modern Showa also has less Hi and Sumi and instead has more white areas on it's body (the traditional Showa has less white and more Sumi and Hi), it may resemble a Sanke at a quick glance. In Sanke, Sumi is not present on the head, nose and mouth. When present on the fins, they are in the form of thin stripes. Sumi is also not found below the lateral line. In Showa, Sumi is found on the head, nose and mouth. When present on the fins, they are seen at the ball joint in block form. Sumi is also usually present below the lateral line of the body. I always use this criteria when buying koi. Comments are welcome. Sly

Hi Majong,

This is pretty much my koi in the picture, with one exception. The fins are not gold, only the outside of the fins (the edges) are gold. this is on all fins and the edge of the tail.

What variety is the koi in the picture, as mine would proabably be the same or very close ?.

Thanks for the picture Laugh

Stuart

Hi Dr Tan,

I have also heard this theory about the naming of Showa's which actually resemble Sanke. You've just taught me about the sumi on the head. So no sumi on head means its a Sanke and sumi on head means its a Showa.

Correct me if I am wrong but the more modern Showa's with white backgound and less Sumi and Hi are called Kindai Showa.

I can see how people get confused as to what seperates the Kindai Showa froma Taisho SnakeUnsure Sly.

Hi,

I agree with you on how to differentiate between a sanke and a showa .I have been keeping koi for 30years now ,but I must say that I prefer the old showa with more sumi and hi than the modern showa.

Hi Stuart, you're right, Kindai Showa = Modern Showa. It's abit tricky to differentiate a tosai Showa from a tosai Sanke by mere appearance. This is because the Sumi on the head may not be clear or developed in a tosai Showa. Hence it may appear like a Sanke. Similarly a tosai Sanke may appear like a tosai Kohaku before the Sumi developes. So you can see that Sumi may develope later, even as late as 2 years. This probably makes the hobby more interesting and challenging! Sly

Hi Koiboy01, wow...! Shocked 30years is a long time. How misleading can a name be...! We should call you Koimaster. Laugh Hope you don't mind if I call you 'uncle'. Yeah, somehow I agree with you because I find that the traditional Showa looks more imposing, fierce and grand especially if it is of Jumbo size. Wink
