Young showa Can't Post

Hallo all

i posted a pic of 2 small kohakus i purchased last month and got some very interesting feedback on this forum.

well on new year's day i purchased another showa. it's about 1 year + a couple of months old. I bought it because i think it would be interesting to see how it turns out as it grows. i'm not sure if the photo will tell an accurate picture but the koi has very impressive skin / color.

would really like to hear people's input on my purchase.

thank you!

nice showa you have there. good hi and more sumi to be developed. i think there is potential of developing a 'y' sumi on the head. good luck!

The Showa got very nice and interesting pattern. The minus point could be the inbalance motoguru on the pectoral fins. I believe it might be a female koi. Overall, a good selection.

Re: [Jimlee] Young showa [In reply to] Can't Post

thank you for the kind comments.

as with the 2 small Nogami kohakus i posted last month, my main aim with this showa is to raise it to a jumbo and hope it keeps its body shape and nice color / skin in the process. the pattern should take care of itself, and i'm not too much of a perfectionist in that aspect. yes, one of the fins has motoguru while the other doesn't. i think this may have dissuaded some other people from purchasing the koi - it's been at the dealers for about a month since it arrived. lucky for this showa, its new owner does not decide his purchases on such kind of "negatives" Wink. after all, i can't afford the perfect tategoi anyway so try to look at the positives instead. i think if a fish grows to a big size and keeps its basic good points such as shape, color, and demeanour, then the small imperfections of its pattern will be overshadowed. that's my view, anyway. Tongue

cheers!

Well...since you ask me to guess...I hope you will not be offended if I put a price on it.

It is better not to put the exact price but let say we put it in a range of $$$$.

Since it is small Koi, about a year old, has some potential, my modest guess is about $200 to $400.

Re: [jsoon] Young showa [In reply to] Can't Post

heh heh, don't worry. i'm not easily offended, besides this is koi we are talking about, not a car so price is usually subjective. furthermore, i am asking you to guess based on just 2 pictures downsized to fit the size limit!

actually i paid SGD500 for it. it is 34cm (as you can see from the ruler pic). The breeder is Isa. Don't know the story on breeders but if i'm not mistaken this one is quite good with showas, which is always a difficult koi to breed due to various problems.

the thing i like about the koi is that the both the shape and the skin is good. if it ever reaches 70cm+ it should be a good addition to most collections.

it's now living (and hopefully growing and fast!) in a big 100ton pond at the dealer's. the pond has about 20 kois in it, so no issue of overcrowding.

i'll make a decision in 3 months whether to continue to grow it there or bring it back to Jakarta.

i am currently on a "quest" so to speak to find youngish kois to bring up in my new home. so far, including this one and the 2 kohakus i purchased last month, i have a grand total of 3! will perhaps stop at 6 this year and evaluate from what i could learn from these specimens, before buying more.

Hi Soelistyo,

Again, nice selection of a tategoi. God broad shoulders. I think it will grow huge given the luxury of the big pond. I would be interested to see how this Showa will develop.

It would be good to know the breeder though. This may give you an indication how this Koi will develop.

Cheers

Re: [TanSL] Young showa [In reply to] Can't Post

Hallo TanSL

glad you like this koi also. A koi hobbyist who can't afford a developed jumbo has to get his kicks from other means, and getting to see how a young koi develops in time is surely one of the best alternatives.

The breeder is Isa, i think they are one of the Niigata breeders. Maybe not so well known, but I am not expecting champion koi anyway for my money, so as long as it's a nice healthy (and BIG) koi in the coming months, i will be very satisfied.

I will keep you posted on this forum about the development. it should be interesting to see how the showa's growth compares to the 2 kohakus which are in a local mud pond. whatever happens, this will be a good learning experience (affect of type of pond, development of color/pattern on showa, growth rate based on characteristics during early stage).

I might learn a thing or two from this. since you seem interested too, i will update you in the months to come. wish me luck.

sorry for late reply.

yes, bought at SummerKoi. i've only pruchased koi a few times in Singapore, and so far only from this dealer. i like the familiarity of sticking with one dealer and so far find the guys there (Kok Ann and Kok Hwee) very friendly and willing to dispense knowledge.

do you have similar good experience dealing with them?
