a love for koi Can't Post

Hi, am Jon and i am new to this forum, i have been hooked by a love for koi, and have been keeping them for about a year. I have a 10ton pond with 9 koi, unlike many people, i chose not to overstock my pond. THe pond is not really good for koi though, as it is only three feet deep. i didnt design it for koi keeping, and so it dosent have a botton drain. Now, i have decided to build a new pond, this one will be of about 60 tons. I am just saying that i am truly happy that i found this site, it is really great to be able to talk to other koi lovers from around the world.Laugh

Seeing the high prices that people on the forum pay for quality koi makes me wonder, maybe it is a good thing that Slovenia isnt very into the hobby yet, as i am able to get A grade japaneese tategoi for good money. Even the ful grown ones are cheaper. A have bought a beautiful kohaku, tancho kohaku, and tancho sanke tategoi for about 15pounds each. They are really A grade tategoi, and anywhere else, the reputable dealers would have stolen theese straight away and sold them for 3-5 times the price. When i take some photos of my koi ill be sure to post them here. If anybody bothered to read this, then thank u. I love this site.Smile

Hi Koihaku,

I am in the same boat as you. My pond is 3,000 gal which is about 12 tonne of water. It does not have a bottom drain. It is however 5' deep, so it is ok for my koi especially with the filter I have running.

I am in the process of building a new pond. This hsould be about 20,000 gal and 7' deep. Which is about 80 tonnes.

Maybe we can exchange Idea's. I am still in the design phase at the moment. I am making a wish list of everything I want for the pond, like Heater (I'm in UK , cold in winter) etc. I will not be able to get everything at once aprt from the absolute essentials as money may be a bit tight. However I want to design the pond and garden so that I can leave room for all on my list and but it at a later date.

If you want to swap idea's or discuss problems you can reach me at :

Hi

My pond doesn't have a bottom drain either but when I started keeping koi 30 years ago(I still have one of the first koi out of four I bought in 1972 which makes her 30 years old this year ,swimming in my pond I also have a few over 25 years old ) we didn't have bottom drains in the UK, so I use a vacume to clear any debris and blanketweed .my pond contains 6,500 imp.gallons.

Wow koiboy, u have a beautiful pond and a lovely japanese garden.

Actually i am just in the process of making a Japanese garden around the pond. It dosent look much yet. As my house is fairly new, everything isnt totally done yet, and the back verandah was till now just a big concrete area. Now i have put about 1.5m of tiles at the sides where the house is and down to the garden, and the rest is a zen garden. The back i have made into a natural garden, in it is situated the pond, and i have also made a mount Fuji imitation, with a large boulder on top. A path of stepping stones goes past the pond, and i have put in, with a lot of strain, a large flat stone as a viewing platform by the pond. It dosent look that beautiful yet, because all the trees are from 1' to 2' tall and all the grass hasnt grown back. But it really looks nice around my pond, and i hope itll be as nice as urs one daySmile.

Jon
