kohaku sanke showa? what do you think? Can't Post

i got these off a website,Thing is i picked three i wanted ,got two of the ones i picked and one i didn t ,plus he sent me an extra, total 4, the ones i picked i just picked because i liked them ,but i m really wondering about the quality of these. There are more than 4 pictured here and they vary 8-12 1/2 inches (the ones i got from him).i really like them , but a little upset i didn t get the one i had picked although i had just picked it as i liked it , they are the two larger kohukas(not the little orange kohaku) and the large 12 inch sanke (he was the extra,)and what appears to be more of a showa than a sanke ,though he looks like a sanke to me,i m not really sure about that, can not complain about the large extra one he sent ,i m not complaining about the deal , it seems to me he treated me alright , what do you think , thanksSmile

Hi layla

How much did you pay for these kois? They looked not too bad to me. Nothing special but nice enough to keep.Smile

Hi Stuart

Not impossible or unheard of for 2 yr olds under 40cm to breed. Smile If the conditions are right, I believe they are mature enough to do so. However, I read somewhere that younger kois that breed do not produce high quality babies or are prone to disease and may possess genetic defects.

I hope this hasn't happened to yours!

Strange as it may seem but the babies seem fine, no problem, they are eating healthy, swimming naturally, I only have 1 or 2 which I had to cull because of lock jaw i.e where the mouth is constantly open - it's a common problem with fry they try to eat food which is too big for them and they break or dislocate their fragile jaw's and being only a few months old you can not fix them as it would do them more damage. The problem with lock jaw is that they eat less, grow less and are weaker than other koi.

Anyway back to the problems. My Yama has started to show signs of carp pox. It always seems to happen to the favourite koi. I noticed a few months ago after the babies were born that she has what looked like a scale enclosed in a waxy white lump. I could not find anything under the score so I treated for Ich and bacteria. After 2 weeks of treatment she did not show any recover signs. It's now getting colder and as you probably know carp pox get worst as the water gets colder. She's no longer the prettiest koi in my pond, but she is still my favourite as she is the tamest and has a wonderful personality (as far as koi go). I will be moving her indoor's within the next month as I want to try and keep her in warm water. If I raise the temp in the water to about 80 Degrees (F) , the carp pox are likely to disappear. However its very rare that carp pox will ever die off, they lay dormant until the winter months and then take over again.

Sorry to hear about the yamabuki ogon. I sure hope you find a way to help it to recover.

Yup, if its carp pox, then heating up to 85 degrees F will remove the pox. Also, add salt during the treatment. Hopefully, it will not recur.

Finges crossed.

Just out of interest what is the best way to heat the water ?.

I don't want to have to heat my entire pond as I can not afford to do that at this time.

However I wouldn't mind having a heater for my hospital tank (400 gals).

Any idea's how I could go about this ?

I've never heated my water before but apparently there's this heating device which I've seen. It's a longish metal rod which is attached to a wire on one end. Plug it into the socket and the rod will slowly heat up the water. Need a thermometer to gauge the temperature. You wouldn't want to 'cook' your fish!

Can you get hold of this?

I think I have this already. Its used to stop Ice forming on top of your water. It is a thick metal tube with a white polystyrene float on the top. The only problem with this is that it is either on or off. I'm not sure what sort of temperature it can provide in a 400 gal tank. Maybe I'll experiement without any koi in their for a few weeks. Then if I need two or three to get to 80's I'll got out and buy another couple. If I remember rightly they are only about £10 each so compared to a heat exchanger and a boiler plus fitting cost £10 to £400 puts a smile on my face. Thanks for the suggestion.

Stuart, these thing are called an aquarium heater just in case u haven't heard of one.... For a 400Gal tank, u'll need a 300W heater or whatever is recommended by the manufacturer. These are thermostat control heaters which you set the temperature by turning a dial to your desired temp (in Degrees C or F) and the heater does the job of keeping the temp for you.

It's commonly made of heating coils rolled around some ceramic material, completely encased in a glass covering. Geez.... living in the UK I can't believe you've never come across one of these thing? If you keep tropical fish, u'll know what they are....Any aquarium shop in the UK will carry this.

Carp pox is just like chicken pox to us... it won't kill your fish and there's little you can do (a little salt and heat wouldn't hurt though). It's Viral, so no medication will do. So long as it's not Koi Herpes Virus (which is the equivalent of HIV), then it's no problem.... just let it run it's course and the fish will be fine.

U can only take the sellers word as to its origin. For all you know, it may have been an Isreali koi. In any case, your Showa and Sanke are pretty decent buys for the price. Nice decent fish... doesn't quite matter where they were from. As for the Hi Utsuri, I'd give it a miss.... Don't like th body shape at all... Short body. Also, don't seen any indication that the Sumi (black) is exceptionally strong.

I like your Showa though.... Something to look forward to would be how the black will come out and finish off the koi. May be a stunning specimen in years to come..... that's one of the joys of koi keeping; watching the colours change. Wink

Hi Layla

Agree with Kevin that the hi utsuri is not up to mark. The sumi is not well spread out and the body is rather short as well. Wouldn't look good.
