koi food for winter Can't Post

Hi,

It is winter here in Seattle and the temp is pretty low...around the 40s. Does anyone know what I should feed my koi, which is outside in my small pond? I heard that wheat germ are good...does anyone know which brand is the best or good quality for koi?

thanks

HI JT818,

As far as I'm concern, try not to feed them too much as their metabolism is pretty low and tehy don't tend to eat so much around this time.

Wheatgerm is good enough for winter time. High amount of protein contain in food is much better for them.

Hi,
Do you have any sort of pond heater in your pond ?.

If not then once the temp get below 5C then you should stop feeding them altogether.

I live in the UK and the temp here is around 10C. I'm only feeding my koi once a week now as I don't have a pond heater (just a floating ice preventer).

You may find that a very small portion of wheat germ each morning will still be there in the evening. If this is the case then your Koi are already in their Winter wonderland and you should stop feeding.

It is true that koi can only survive 7 - 10 days without food. But in the winter they can go for 2 - 3 months without any as long as the water conditions are ok and the oxygen levels are up to standard.

This is the hardest time for us winter koi keepers. Roll on the Summer [biggrin]

Stuart
