Hi Javier

There are many other factors to determine how big your koi will grow to one day! The genes/bloodline of the koi, the quality of food you feed, water quality and of course the size of your pond. In theory, kois tend to grow larger in deeper and bigger ponds but this isn't necessarily true all the time. I have seen owners with very large kois of up to 60-70 cm in a FG tank.

You just have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that your kois turn out to be jumbos!Smile Generally, kois can grow to as large as 60-70cm within a couple of years given all the right conditions.

Best wishes to you!

Hello Johnson,

I keep my kois in 8X4X2 ft fg tank. My koi keep growing and now some have reached 50cm in length. I think my small tank is going to be overcrowded soon. May I know how much longer I could keep them in this small tank? Thank you.

Regards

William

Hi, not much longer I guess. You'll see a slow down in the growth rates even if you manage to maintain good water. Smile

Hi William

Wow, your kois are all now approaching 50cm! Great!Smile Dr Tan is right, there is not much room for them to grow longer due to space constraints. Either you need to reduce the fish load by giving some of them to me (just kiddingWink) or start thinking of a pond!

Unless you are absolutely happy and contented with what you have now, then no worries!

Thank you Johnson and Dr.Tan. I have been overstocking. The water quality is ok and the water is still clear. I will save to build a pond.

Hi,

William

How many kois have you have in your pond? My pond is about your size 8' x 4 x 2.5 and I am keeping slightly less than 20. I used to have about 30 but i finally relised that it is overstocked and gave away some to friends. At 30 kois level, my pond was easily cloudy and water parameters seem not too good but now my total number is less than 20 and the pond is crystal clear again and parameter is good.

It is this satisfactory condition of my pond that made me tempted again to add a new koi - a 50+ cm giant. WOW !! My biggest collection is probably 40cm and I hope with this giant addition, my pond population can be as happy as before or I will to give away some more of those not too quality ones.

I think if all my < 20 kois were to grow up to 50 cm, I will have no choice but to build a real size pond. I will have to accumulate my knowledge now to face the greater chalenge ahead. I hope it will not be too soon as I really like my present pond, though small , is well poised and somehow blended uniquely with the ambient of my garden.

Regards

    Hello,

I have 15 kois. The size range from 25cm to 50 cm. My water is clear. I only have the ammonia test kit and my ammonia level is 0. I do not have nitrite and nitrate test kit. However I do not have to switch on the uv light to prevent the water from turning green. Hence I think the filter presently is still efficient in performing its duty. Beside I do have a pot of water lily inside the pond and a new pot of water canal that I added about a week ago.

My pond maintenance is simple. I cleaned the filter in the 1st chamber of my filter every week with the pond water and replaced 30% of the pond water with tap water. I do not add any anti chlorine solution. Instead I passed the tap water through a home made charcoal filter which I build myself from some water pipe and filled with approxiamtely 500g of charcoal that we usually placed inside our filter. However I do have anti chlorine solution on standby just in case my diy filter doesn't work. But so far so good.

I enjoy watching the kois swimming. I do not have the extra money to build a proper pond for my kois at this moment. I hope I could have a proper pond within a few years time.

    Happy koing.

    Regards

    William

    Hi William

I am happy that things are going the way you want it to be and your fishes are doing fine!Smile

You must have heard and read about the importance of testing your water a 100 times now but I can't help but stress it one more time that despite the relatively incident-free times you are enjoying now but if you do not test for nitrites and pH, then your pond/tank will be a ticking time-bomb waiting to go off.

Anything can happen within a few days or hours even if you're not careful. A sudden pH swing or an overfeed can spike the water and you might not know until it is too late. So better be safe than sorry, I strongly urge you to get the pH and nitrites test kit.

The weekly replacement of 30% water will help in reducing the toxin in your system but it is really a waste changing so much water so often. If you test your water and if parameters are great, no need to change 30%. 10% is sufficient.

Of course, this is only my opinion. I wish you well, William.

    Have a nice weekend!Smile

    Johnson
